Occupancy in October 2001, Up From Previous Year |
Providence, RI (December 4, 2001) The Providence Warwick Convention
and Visitors Bureau (PWCVB) has confirmed today that hotel occupancy in
the Providence Warwick area has rebounded since the September 11th attacks
which left much of the travel industry strained.
The PWCVB has released a report based on research conducted by Smith
Travel Research that hotel occupancy in Providence this October 2001 (most
recent data available) was 84.5%. This number had increased from
74.5% in September 2001, and is in fact 0.2% higher than the hotel occupancy
rate the previous year in October 2000. Warwicks occupancy rate
also increased in October 2001 to 88.2%, up from 78% in September 2001.

The PWCVB attributes the increase in occupancy to several key factors,
including citywide conventions scheduled for October holding strong, business
travel to the area beginning to resume, and the regional leisure market
remaining very active due to several events that had taken place in the
area during October. In addition, the average daily hotel room rate
actually increased in Providence by $1.74 when comparing October 2000 to
October 2001.
Naturally were pleased to see the destination recovering in October, said Jim Wood, President and CEO of the Providence Warwick CVB. The PWCVB will continue to help stimulate the local tourism economy by implementing a Fall/Winter Leisure Package Program; by adding extra emphasis on direct marketing to our local and regional corporate base to attract smaller meetings in the short-term; and by maintaining our strategies of selling the destination to future citywide conventions in the long-term. The Providence Warwick Convention and Visitors Bureau is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization whose mission is to create vibrant growth for the local hospitality economy by promoting, developing, and expanding a united visitor industry. |
