The American Hotel & Lodging Association Adds
Nearly 200,000 New Guest Rooms to its Membership
During 100-day Drive
Washington, September 5, 2001 - The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) added nearly 200,000 new guest rooms to its membership during its 100-day "One for One for One" membership drive.  Almost 2,200 properties representing 188,570 rooms signed up for membership through their respective member state lodging association during this innovative campaign.

The "One for One for One in 100 Days" campaign ran from Memorial Day to Labor Day 2001.  During this aggressive membership drive, new member properties joined their state association for just $1 per one room for one year - an average savings of 87 percent off the regular $8 per room membership price.  Once a member of its state association, the property automatically becomes enrolled in AH&LA.

"The idea was to get new members in the door, let them test the waters and see what we're all about," said 2001 AH&LA Chairman John Russell.  "Now that they've joined, our member state associations are eager to show them the many benefits of belonging.  Our goal is to retain at least 50 percent of these new members."

The campaign gained momentum from the initial support of Steve Belmonte, president and CEO of Ramada Franchise Systems, and Keith Pierce, president and CEO of Wingate Inns International, Inc.  From this encouragement, several major hotel companies joined the association including, Days Inns Worldwide, Inc.; Howard Johnson International, Inc.; Lodgian, Inc.; and Travelodge, Inc.

In addition, 226 AH&LA allied members joined the association through a variation of the campaign, including the Colgate-Palmolive Company and Subway.  These supplier and vendor companies paid only $100 for one year, which equals to a discount of up to 95 percent*.

*Regular allied membership dues are based on a company's annual gross revenue from the U.S. lodging industry.

The American Hotel & Lodging (AH&LA), is a 91-year-old federation of state lodging associations throughout the United States with some 11,000 property members worldwide, representing more than 1.4 million guest rooms.  AH&LA provides its members with assistance in operations, education, and communications, and lobbies on Capitol Hill to provide a business climate in which the industry can continue to prosper.  Individual state associations provide representation at the state level and offer many additional cost-saving benefits.
