What’s So Great About Wellness Hotels?

Tucker Johnson | August 28, 2018

By Tucker Johnson When the first wellness-inspired 'EVEN Hotel' by IHG opened in 2014 I remember thinking, "It's not for me but there must be a bunch of people that are looking for something like this." In retrospect, I guess my assessment wasn't too far off as four years later they have only nine hotels open and 14 in the pipeline. These growth numbers seem especially weak when compared to 'avid', IHG's answer to Millennial-focused brands Tru (Hilton) and Moxy (Marriott). The 'avid' brand was announced in 2017, and now has one hotel open and 126 hotels in the pipeline. I often read about new wellness-inspired hotels and amenities a...

Beyond Spa – Embrace the Wellness Revolution

Babs Harrison | June 8, 2018

By Babs Harrison Spa directors are in a funk. Many see declining bookings and just about all see diminished buzz but face reality: the pendulum has swung and the spa that had been so in maybe 10 years ago now is plummeting towards obsolescence. There's a stampede of guests occurring - just not for the same-old spa services. Smart properties already are enjoying boom times. That's the boldfaced message in a New York Times story by reporter Elaine Glusac headlined "Your Next Trip Might Change Your Life." Once upon a time, a pampering vacation involving lots of massages, some Sanskrit chanting, a twirl of a crystal, an...

Health and Success in the Summer of 2018

Robert A. Rauch | May 2, 2018

By Robert A. Rauch, CHA I seldom write about success or health, typically favoring hotel operations, leadership, finance, marketing or forecasts. But today, I offer a summer check up on our success, health, wellness and overall fitness plan, one that I have just commenced. Because it is May, we have a full summer ahead of us. After reading Tom Brady's new book, The TB-12 Method, my colleague, Larry Broughton's book, Flashpoints for achievers and a book by Bob Burg and John David Mann, called Go-Giver, I decided this was the perfect time to set up a summer program for health and success. Brady's book is about pliability, flexibility, fi...

In the travel industry, wellness is more valuable than ever. People are living healthier lifestyles, and they don't want to give that up when they're on the road. According to the Global Wellness Institute, travelers are set to spend more than $800 billion on health-focused trips by 2020. Health-focused resorts around the world are finding exciting new ways to capitalize on this growing demand, and paving the way for smaller properties to enhance their own wellness offerings. The Global Wellness Summit recently released several studies including "A New Era of Transformative Wellness Travel" which reported that destinations are creating...
