Aug. 09–ADRIAN — Work on the hotel being built at the Adrian Mall has been underway now for the past few weeks.

The Namou Hotel Group of Southfield is building a Hampton Inn & Suites with the help of its architecture firm, Bowers and Associates.

Susan Bowers, senior architect, said work being done there currently has the general contractor, "working with the city of Adrian to meet all regulations for the underground utilities that are required before the building is constructed."

She said, "The hotel will start to take form over the next couple of months."

The plan is to build a four-story, 101-room hotel in the northwest area of the mall parking lot near Aubree's Pizzeria and Grill. The hotel will have a pool, outdoor patio area and parking, according to the plan. Its planners have said at previous city meetings that they expect to invest around $10 million into the location.

A previous plan to build rental housing there was pulled from the table.

When it was introduced and approved by the city, the plan needed an ordinance amendment to the zoning code moving 1335 S. Main St. from the B-4 Shopping District to the B-2 Community Business. The zoning change allowed the building of a hotel at that spot, which was not permitted in B-4. The city also made the decision to permit it to be four-stories, or 57 feet, high at that location.

Bowers said the hotel has a planned opening for the fourth quarter or fall/winter 2019.

"This Hampton Inn & Suites is the latest and greatest prototype from Hilton and will be one of the first built in the country," Bowers said.
