W Hotels Worldwide, part of Marriott International, expands its footprint into southwest China with a hot and spicy new addition to its dynamic portfolio. Owned by KWG Group Holdings, W Chengdu sets the stage for bold, independent guests who want to revel in the city’s unique and vibrant rhythm through the brand’s new/next lifestyle. W Chengdu is situated within Chengdu’s Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone, shaking up the local hospitality scene and creating a welcoming vibe for creative entrepreneurs and stylish trendsetters.

As UNESCO’s first City of Gastronomy in Asia, Chengdu is famed for its fiery Sichuan cuisine drawing in food lovers from around the world. Evolving from an ancient city with rich cultural traditions such as Sichuan Opera, to one known around the world as ‘the Silicon Valley of China’ – Chengdu is a vital hub for world commerce and home to more than 200 Fortune 500 companies. Guests can score a table at the hottest new restaurant, get tips on the best local street wear boutiques in TaiKoo Li, or snag tickets to a sold-out show through the W Insider, who can plan experiences that are well off-the-beaten track and connect guests with the latest happenings in Chengdu.

“While Chengdu is the hub for Western China and a newly minted ‘first-tier city’, an incredibly important and popular NextGen destination in China, it also features dynamic street fashion, design, and is an underground music mecca,” said Henry Lee, President, Greater China, Marriott International. “The city is breaking the mold of tradition and reinventing itself at every corner, making it a perfect fit for our newest W hotel in China. The opening of W Chengdu marks an exciting milestone for Marriott International’s portfolio of luxury brands to expand further into this part of the country, and W Chengdu is poised to become the social center of this exhilarating city.”

Dare To Be Different

Chengdu is transforming. A melting pot that fuses rich traditions with a dynamic modern lifestyle, Chengdu-inspired international design firm Glyph Design Studio playfully named the hotel’s design narrative ‘Du’titude’. The design tells the city’s transformation by combining its history and innovation with nods to Chengdu’s most famous attractions rendered with unexpected contemporary twists. UNESCO’s World Heritage Site Jiuzhaigou National Park inspired the color palette of the hotel through neutral earth tones contrasted with décor sporting rainbow hues of turquoise, blues, violets and magenta hues. Meanwhile mahjong, a popular local game played in teahouses across the city, can be found in tiling motifs and stacked layers throughout the expansive spaces.

Bold and bright, the hotel façade’s colored glass and signature W sign light up the night. Set foot inside the Living Room (the W brand’s take on the traditional hotel lobby) where the electric, creative pulse of the city can be felt through an interactive, LED virtual waterfall by world-renowned interdisciplinary art collective teamLab. When guests stand on its platform, they obstruct the course of the waterfall, causing the flow of water to change directions. Artwork depicting Sichuan Opera actors with magnetic graffiti splashes represent a stylish clash of old and new. Chengdu’s iconic mascot, the giant panda, also makes a fashionable appearance through a pair of svelte pandas sporting sunglasses rendered in opalescent fiberglass and a giant blue panda sculpture welcoming guests from the moment of arrival. A series of stone-like artworks in swirling hypnotic hues and large lighting fixtures lined in stunning floral motifs inspired by Shu ethnic brocade also add dazzling effects to the entry area.

Glam interiors in bright and audacious tones with local touches capture a playful yet plush ambiance in the design of W Chengdu’s 297 stylish guest rooms and suites. The Extreme WOW Suite (the brand’s modern interpretation of the traditional presidential suite) features 368 square meters of flexible space with a sculptural bar and lounge area for relaxation and play. Customized panda cushions and teapots in each guestroom give a nod to Chengdu’s local culture and story. W guests can also now refresh with a set of luxurious bath amenities from sustainable beauty brand DAVINES, made from natural eco-friendly ingredients in Parma, Italy.

Sizzle Onto The Scene

From the ‘World Gourmet Capital,’ W Chengdu serves up a variety of stylish venues with two restaurants and two bars blending edgy design and distinctive dining experiences. A fashionable space that evolves from a daytime playground to an evening party pad, the LIVING ROOM is a stylish place to mingle over meticulously crafted cocktails and tantalizing bites while admiring the immersive LED virtual waterfall by teamLab. Sleek and modern, the striking interiors of YAO YEN match the modern Cantonese and Sichuan menu paired with fragrant regional teas. Emblazoned with graphic neon calligraphy in Sichuan dialect and hand-painted paper-cut patterns, ZING is a vibrant all-day dining venue features fresh Southeast Asian flavors. Set to be Chengdu’s next nightlife destination, SPARK is a rooftop patio with sweeping panoramas that offer party packages including wine and spirits as well as regular sessions with DJ talent.
