U.S. citizen outbound totaled 6.84 million travelers for the month and 66.7 million YTD Travel to Overseas Up Seven Percent, Mexico 16 Percent and Canada Three Percent -September

U.S. travel to overseas markets totaled 2.95 million, up seven percent in September and 10 percent for the year (29.6 million). Regional results for the month were as follows:

  • Europe, 1.676 million travelers, up 17 percent
  • Caribbean, 357,000 travelers, down 15 percent
  • Asia, 420,000 travelers, up four percent
  • Middle East, 158,000 travelers, up two percent
  • Central America, 147,000 travelers, up one percent
  • South America, 119,000 travelers, down eight percent
  • Oceania, 48,000 travelers, flat
  • Africa, 30,000 travelers, up four percent

U.S. travel to other North American markets totaled 3.886 million and was up 11 percent compared to September 2016. Travel to Canada and Mexico for the year (37.1 million) was up nine percent.

  • Mexico, 2.4 million travelers, up 16 percent in September. Air travel (467,000) was up four percent. Border 1+ nights up 23 percent and ‘Tourist’ (longer haul) travel up eight percent.
  • Canada, 1.46 million travelers, up three percent. Air travel (457,000) up two percent

September 2017 YTD Market Share

U.S. travel to overseas locations accounted for 44 percent of U.S. outbound international travel.

  • Europe, a 19 percent share;
  • Caribbean, a 10 percent share;
  • Asia, a six percent share;
  • Central America, a four percent share;
  • South America, a two percent share which dropped due to declines in non-stop travel to Brazil (-29%), Chile (-8%), Peru (-5%) and Venezuela (-42%);
  • Middle East, a three percent share;
  • Oceania, a one percent share, and
  • Africa, almost one percent share

North American markets received 56 percent of all U.S. international outbound travel.

  • U.S. travel to Mexico a 38 percent share; and
  • Canada a 17 percent share.

NTTO reports U.S. outbound travel monthly by all modes, expanding beyond air-only traffic. Total departure travel, inclusive of all modes, to Canada and Mexico is reported in addition to the air-only subtotals. The timing of this report is dependent on receipt of aggregate data from Stats Canada and Banco de Mexico.

Overseas and Mexico air markets reflect non-stop air-only data. A portion of the non-stop passenger traffic to Europe, Middle East and Mexico will transit those regions, connecting through airline hubs (LHR, AMS, FRA, CDG, DBX, MEX etc.) to points beyond.
