Featuring a downtown main hotel with panoramic rooftop and chic NYC culinary concept, and an intimate seaside Beach House, the property will offer the region’s first boutique lifestyle hotel experience, where downtown meets beach

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MEXICO (AUGUST 2015)Thompson Hotels announces the Fall 2015 opening of its second property in Mexico, Thompson Playa del Carmen, located on lively La Quinta Avenida – Playa’s two-mile, pedestrian-only thoroughfare lined with countless shopping and dining options – at Calle 12, which boasts the trendiest bars and nightclubs in Riviera Maya.

The first-of-its-kind property in Playa, Thompson Playa del Carmen will be complete with two locations, the centrally-located main hotel and intimate oceanfront Beach House a short, five-minute walk away, each offering a distinct vibe. New York City-based hospitality team EMM Group will open the first Mexican outpost of its wildly popular dining concept, CATCH, which will be perched on the sprawling rooftop of the main building, overlooking the alluring Caribbean Sea and sparkling city lights. Owned by Thor Urbana Capital, and managed by international, multi-brand lifestyle company Commune Hotels & Resorts, the property has assembled a design dream team of Mexican talent, including lauded Mexico City-based architecture firm GFA, and notable designers Niz+Chauvet, who together fused mid-century Mexican accents with colorful geometric patterns and dynamic textures to create a vibrant, 1950s-inspired, glamorous Mexican oasis.

Located on what’s known as ‘Calle Corazon’ on the celebrated La Quinta Avenida, Thompson Playa del Carmen’s main hotel is in the heart of downtown, perfectly positioned to offer guests a colorful urban atmosphere and an authentic connection to the bustling city. Thompson Playa del Carmen will be the only hotel in the city with a retail component, housing a collection of well-known contemporary fashion brands. The oceanfront Beach House, located just blocks from the main hotel, is a more intimate, bohemian-inspired experience, set to open early 2016.

“Thompson Playa del Carmen will be the only hotel in Playa with both a central La Quinta Avenida downtown location, as well as a beachfront retreat,” said Julian Smaldoni, General Manager of Thompson Playa del Carmen. “As the only hotel in Riviera Maya offering two experiences, guests will have the option to sip signature cocktails by the rooftop pool and dance the night away at CATCH, or find Zen with oceanfront yoga and enjoy the privacy of the nearby Beach House.”

Thompson Playa del Carmen is richly inspired by the community and culture in which it resides. Both the main building and Beach House will honor the historic legacy of Playa del Carmen, while adding layers of design, gastronomy and nightlife that will enhance the guest experience. The main hotel will evoke a metropolitan, youthful edge with 92 guestrooms featuring mid-century contemporary décor with a distinct Mexico-Caribbean flair. The highly-activated 30,000-square-foot rooftop with spectacular panoramic views will feature a meandering infinity pool and sea-to-table dining experience and nightlife concept, CATCH.

Thompson Playa del Carmen’s connection to Mexican culture is woven throughout the hotel’s design, spearheaded by internationally-renowned Mexican design team Niz+Chauvet. Design highlights include light-washed concrete, Mexican marble, oxidized metal shelving, and a native, carved lava rock stone desk located in the lobby; custom furniture handmade in Mexico, found both in-room and throughout the public spaces; and whitewashed panels, indigenous stone, hand-pressed tiles and original art in the guest rooms.

In the main building, CATCH, located on the hotel’s captivating rooftop, will conjure a beach-like feel with the restaurant’s signature turquoise touches and outdoor terrace piped with soft, intimate lighting. The rooftop will also feature indigenous landscaping and greenery, including a chef’s garden and ‘living wall,’ and an infinity rooftop pool with in-water loungers and island perches, flanked by plush cabanas. Most guestrooms will have terraces, and the Thompson Suites will boast outdoor fire pits and hot tubs.

“Thompson Playa del Carmen marks the much-anticipated expansion of Thompson Hotels in Mexico, after the recent unveiling of our first property in the country, The Cape in Cabo San Lucas,” said Niki Leondakis, CEO of Commune Hotels & Resorts. “Riviera Maya is a culturally and ecologically rich destination with an authentic Mexican charm. Our mission for Thompson Playa del Carmen is to celebrate the vibrancy of the region, while introducing a completely new lifestyle experience for locals and visitors that seamlessly blends the urban, downtown culture of Playa with a laid-back, Caribbean seaside escape.”

Scheduled to open in early 2016, the bohemian-inspired Beach House will feature 27 luxury rooms and suites, each with its own terrace, a beachfront pool, cabanas, and a casual restaurant and bar, against the stunning backdrop of the white sands and the azure-blue Caribbean Sea. From the shores of the Beach House, guests can enjoy a variety of beach and outdoor adventure activities, including stand-up paddleboarding, yoga and diving.
