Annapolis, Md. (Feb. 9, 2016) – The completely renovated, Historic Inns of Annapolis — nestled in the heart of the Historical District, announces a fresh design and feel that is an ode to the buildings’ elegant past. The Maryland Inn and its vintage sister properties, Governor Calvert House and Robert Johnson House, form the Historic Inns of Annapolis with each building offering a unique ambience that reflects the colorful stories of yesteryear’s famous guests, including George Washington, in a beautiful setting that maintains the historical integrity of the space and charming seaport community.

“The Historic Inns of Annapolis have been a Maryland landmark since 1772. Our goal was to maintain the rich history of the homes through the re-design while incorporating a current, timeless luxury experience through décor and ambiance,” said Daryl Strayer, general manager of Historical Inns of Annapolis. “Preserving the essence and character of the homes was essential to the success of the renovation.”

With traditional 18th century architectural façade, the 124 rooms and nine suites of the inn span four levels providing views of Chesapeake Bay and the extraordinary State House. The buildings are unique with high ceilings while the crown molding is not the same in every room. There are 90 guest room types so guests can visit several times and have different experience each visit.

The design team made sure that the public space feels like a beautifully appointed home. Key antique pieces of furniture and artifacts have been preserved to retain the original character of the houses. There are design elements in the signage that are inspired by the pocket watch, as each room number is indicated by the hands of the watch face. The furniture selected is an interpretation of traditional pieces from the era. The fabrics are a mix of patterns such as plaid, toile and damask and pewter accents have been used for the metals on the sconces, lamps and signage.

A strong nod to the area’s history, the refreshed space showcases references to the United States Naval Academy and Chesapeake Bay through historical paintings and the color palette. Accenting high ceilings with robins egg blue paint that changes shades as the light hits it throughout the day. The selected carpet was based on a wilton weave area rug of that period. The drapery fabric is from a traditional American toile by Schumacher Fabric and the bathroom wall covering, Chenonceau, was an original Schumacher pattern. All millwork is painted a crisp, clean white while the cornice at the windows provides a striking contrast with the wall covering, which is, modern version of a watermarked damask in textural, charcoal grey.
