Dec. 01–The Memphis City Council on Tuesday could approve the renovation of a historic, South Main building for a 68-room hotel, restaurant and bar within walking distance of the National Civil Rights Museum in Downtown.

The council's Planning and Zoning Committee is scheduled to discuss granting a special-use permit to California-based developer Wassman Holdings LLC for the "luxury boutique hotel" at 477 S. Main during its meeting at 1:45 p.m. in City Hall.

The hotel will also have meeting and rooftop amenities spaces, and could employ more than 80 people, according to the special-use application. Memphis-based general contractor Montgomery Martin could begin construction by April 1 and finish a year later.

Built in 1913, the 48,000-square-foot building was once the headquarters of the Lewis Supply Co. More recently, the five-story building was home to the Memphis College of Art.
