Internet Access and Cleanliness Top Guest Demands
for a Hotel Room

NEW YORK, Nov. 8, 1999 - When it comes to hotel and motel guest rooms and restrooms, one thing is clearpeople want them to be clean.

Nine out of 10 people interviewed for a new survey said they would be more inclined to choose a hotel if it offered a more hygienic guestroom via antibacterial products, no-touch fixtures, better laundering and stringent cleaning standards. An even greater number (92 percent) said that a dirty public restroom in a hotel or motel would give them a negative impression of the property as a whole.

Clearly it pays to make guest room and restroom cleanliness a top priority, given its potential impact on consumer choices and overall impressions of a hotel or motel, said Debbie Mueller, lodging segment marketing manager for Kimberly-Clark Corporation.

The survey was conducted for the International Hotel/Motel Restaurant Show, being held at the Javits Center in New York City through November 9th, by Opinion Research Corporation International on behalf of Kimberly-Clark.

The Hotel Room of the Future

The survey also asked people which of several innovations they would most like to see in the guestroom of the future and a restroom Jacuzzi topped the list at 22 percent.

Next were:

  • A code for room access, instead of a key or entry card (14 percent)
  • A home theater set-up with an extensive video library (13 percent)
  • Spa services, such as aromatherapy and massages, on-demand (11 percent)
  • Comfort foods, such as ice cream, in an in-room freezer (8 percent)
  • Exercise equipment in the room (7 percent)
What About the Business Traveler?

Business travelers had quite a different wish list for the hotel room of the future.  The top priority for business travelers was to have a computer with Internet access and a printer in every guestroom, according to 59 percent of those respondents who travel for business.  This was even more important to female business travelers, with 68 percent listing this as their number one choice.

Next on the business travelers guest room list, chosen from a list of six options, were:

  • A smart phone with Caller ID and e-mail capabilities (13 percent)
  • Exercise equipment in the room (11 percent)
  • A conference room off the guest room for meetings (4 percent)
  • A personal assistant to handle business requests (3 percent)
  • An electronic book with business books, novels, news and stock information, and other data stored in it (3 percent)
Not surprisingly, technology is more important to business travelers, while comfort and relaxation are the top concerns for vacationers, said Mueller.
