Michael Nowlis Named Chief Executive of
International Hotel & Restaurant Association

Paris, 18 June 1999 Michael Nowlis has been appointed chief executive officer of the Paris-based International Hotel & Restaurant Association (IH&RA), effective 23 August 1999.

Nowlis, 42, comes to the IH&RA after twelve years as deputy director, then director of the Institut de Management Hôtelier International (IMHI) in Paris, a hospitality focused MBA programme run jointly by Cornell University and Groupe ESSEC (France).  He takes over from Ken Hine, who retires this year after a 30 year career in hospitality association management.

"We are delighted to have at the helm of IH&RA a person with Michaels background, experience and knowledge of our industry," said Dr. Osmane Aïdi, IH&RA president.  "His extensive overview of the hospitality sector will enhance his ability to serve the IH&RAs different member constituents.  He is excellently placed to take the association forward into the new millennium.

Nowlis will provide the vision and strategy to drive the association forward, as well as overseeing the day-to-day operations of the IH&RA. Reporting directly to the President of IH&RA and the IH&RA Board, he will be charged with positioning the association to meet the changing needs of its membership in a constantly evolving global business environment.  His tenure will start at the end of August with the associations annual executive board meeting in Paris.

While the IH&RA has accomplished so much in advancing the agenda of the hospitality industry over the last 50 years, never have our challenges and opportunities been greater, said Nowlis.  As we stand on the threshold of the 21st century, I am honoured to have this opportunity to serve one of the worlds great generators of economic activity.

As well as developing membership across the board, Nowlis will also focus on building the presence of the food service sector within the association.

From 1996-1998, Nowlis served as president and chairman of the Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (CHRIE), a 2000-member international association of hospitality and tourism schools.  He is credited with piloting a major financial turnaround and total re-engineering of the councils governance structure.

Nowlis has held educational posts at hospitality management schools in the United States and Switzerland, and several management positions in the hotel and food service industry, including posts at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York and the Hôtel Beau-Rivage, Lausanne.

He has provided consulting and executive education services to government agencies, private corporations and academic institutions across the globe, and serves on the editorial boards of professional and academic publications on three continents.

The International Hotel & Restaurant Association (IH&RA) is a global network of independent and chain operators, national associations, hospitality suppliers and educational centres in the hotel and restaurant industry in more than 150 countries.  As the voice of the industry it represents, protects, promotes and informs its members to enable them to achieve their objectives.
