Accor's Environment Policy Earns 1999 Green Globe Award

Paris, 18 March 1999 - The first 1999 Green Globe award has been attributed to Accor in recognition of its Environment policy.  This award recognises the practical application of the principles to encourage sustainable development in the travel and tourism industry as set out in Agenda 21 of the Rio Earth Summit in 1992.

The award ceremony was held on 10 March as part of the International Travel exhibition in Berlin.  Bob Collier, the Chairman of Green Globe and Geoffrey Lipman, Chairman of the World Travel and Tourism Council awarded first prize to Thierry Mueth, the Groups Environment Director.

Every year, Green Globe organises a competition to judge the Environment policies of travel companies according to the criteria set out in Agenda 21.

This year, the international association chose Accor from amongst 600 companies to receive its top award for the exceptional performance of its environment policy, which has contributed to the sustainable development of the travel industry.

The "Green Globe Program" is an international initiative designed to address sustainable development issues in the world travel and tourism industry. It involves environmental management planning and policy development, energy conservation, waste reduction measures, recycling, respecting special areas and customs, and limiting the use of environmentally-unfriendly products.

First implemented in 1994, Accors environment policy takes the form of permanent measures, both at operational level and in terms of design and research. The Group has also developed special employee training courses.  A Hotel Environment Charter was implemented in 1500 hotels during 1998, and will continue to spread progressively through other Accor establishments.

Accor, European and global Group in the world of travel, tourism and business services is active in 140 countries with 120,000 associates through its four complementary activities: hotels, travel agencies with Carlson Wagonlit Travel, car rentals with Europcar and corporate services with Accor Corporate Services.
