Long Beach Convention and Tourism Sales Figures
Reach Record Highs

LONG BEACH, Calif., Nov. 10, 1998 -  The Long Beach Area Convention Visitors Bureau reported a record-breaking year of results and notable achievements that are quickly building the city's reputation as a prime destination for convention, business and leisure travel. Highlights of the year include a 13 percent increase in future bookings, a six percent rise in hotel occupancy, and a report of 243,000 room nights valued at $315 million due to a strong partnership with the Bureau and area hotels.

"These significant gains in Long Beach's convention and tourism business are a direct result of the aggressive and passionate efforts of a long- standing partnership with the city's hotels, attractions, city officials and the Long Beach Area Convention Visitors Bureau," said Linda Howell DiMario, president and CEO of the LBACVB.

"We are extremely proud of their contributions to Long Beach."

In total, the Travel Industry Sales and the Convention Sales departments booked approximately 406,000 short-term and future room nights, valued at $436 million. Travel Industry Sales booked more than 57,000 leisure travel room nights valued at $56 million, representing an increase of 12 percent over last year, Convention Sales booked 349,000 convention rooms valued at $380 million.

As a result, hotel occupancy is up in Long Beach to a healthy 72 percent, and the average daily room rate has increased 10 percent to $89, according to a PKF report for January through August 1998. In August, Long Beach enjoyed a record-breaking occupancy of 82 percent, up 13 percent from last year and was the only destination in Los Angeles County to show a positive and substantial gain.
