Accor Expands Sofitel Network to India

10 November 1998: Accor, the world's largest hotel group, is expanding its deluxe Sofitel hotel brand into India, with a network initially to comprise five hotels, including an existing hotel in Ahmedabad, in the state of Rajasthan.

Under the arrangement, Ahmedabad's first five-star hotel, The Trident, will be rebranded the Hotel Sofitel Ummed, Ahmedabad. This premier hotel will lead the way for the Sofitel brand in India.

The Trident made its debut in 1995 and since opening, the 85 room hotel has become the citys leading hotel for business travellers. Located in the citys commercial district, with easy access to Ahmedabads airport, the hotel has extensive conference and function facilities, two restaurants and a swimming pool.

As part of the agreement signed today, four other Sofitel hotels will be added to the network, which is already one of the world's most prominent deluxe hotel groups.

The four additional Sofitels all consisting of approximately 100 rooms - are being established in the tourism-oriented cities of Jodhpur (scheduled to open on 1 July 1999), Jaipur (mid-2001 opening), Udaipur (mid-2002), and Jaisalmer (mid-2003). Accor will manage all four hotels, which are being developed by Indian company, the Ummed Group.

Commenting on the agreement to introduce the Sofitel brand into India, Accors Managing Director for Asia, Mr Tony Young, said that India was a crucial addition to the Sofitel network, as the country offered great potential for significant increases in both business and leisure travel.

India has an excellent tradition of offering the highest quality hotel facilities and service, and with Sofitel well-established globally as a leading deluxe hotel brand, we believe that Sofitel will make a significant contribution to tourism and hospitality in India, said Mr Young.

"The Sofitels in India will be distinctive, combining traditional Rajasthan character and style, balanced by the most sophisticated western technology and communication services."

The worldwide Sofitel network currently comprises some 110 hotels, including both prime city centre and key resort locations. New flagship Sofitel hotels are currently under construction in cities such as New York, Chicago, London, Paris and Berlin.

The Sofitel brand is part of the global Accor group, the world's largest hotel and tourism company. Accor has over 2,800 hotels in its network, as well as car rental, travel agency and other tourism services.
