Marriott International To Hire Up To 5,000 Yearly Through New Local Centralized Employment Center

WASHINGTON, Sept. 9, 1998 -  Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE: MAR), the fourth-largest employer in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, today opened the Marriott Employment Center (MEC) in downtown Washington. The Center expects to fill up to 5,000 positions annually throughout the District.

Working with local community groups, the Marriott Employment Center will recruit, screen and place employees in new and vacant positions in the 127 Marriott International and related business units in the area. Located in the heart of D.C. at 1001 G St., N.W., the MEC will provide applicants a centralized starting point to access a wide range of hourly, seasonal, part-time and supervisory jobs in the District and surrounding suburbs. These positions will be available in hotels, senior living communities, food distribution centers, and airport and highway food and service concession facilities.

"We are delighted that we can provide growth opportunities for many residents of the area and develop new and better ways to serve our businesses," said J.W. Marriott, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of the company. Interested job seekers first simply dial a toll-free number for efficient pre-screening. The MEC then schedules interviews at the Center, or if more convenient, at a Marriott hotel located near the applicant. The MEC will also offer a feedback service that assures that both employers and associates are satisfied with the placements and will facilitate transfers for current associates within the area as well as throughout Marriott U.S. businesses.

Prior to a centralized employment facility, job seekers had to apply at individual units, and the company had no centralized mechanism to share resumes or applicants among its many businesses. The MEC will help fuel business growth and employment and career opportunity by matching potential associates with available positions more effectively and efficiently.

"By creating a pool of candidates, the Marriott Employment Center provides a competitive advantage for our businesses while offering associates a variety of career opportunities throughout the company," said John W. Marriott III, senior vice president, Mid-Atlantic Region for Marriott International.

First introduced as a pilot in the Boston area in 1997, and then in Phoenix in January 1998, the Washington, D.C. Center will serve as the prototype for new Centers planned for Baltimore, Dallas, Orlando, Detroit and Philadelphia. For more information on the Washington, D.C. Marriott Employment Center, please call (202) 628-5627, or to complete a pre-screening employment application, call the Marriott National Career Job Hotline at (888) 4-MARRIOTT.
