GLACIER PARK, Mont- Sept. 1, 1998 - -The seven hotels and lodges operating throughout the 1.4 million acres of Glacier National Park have been a destination for the wealthy and adventurous
since the early 1900s, when they were built by the Great Northern Railway. Each of these historic lodges and hotels has a different dining experience, ranging from traditional high tea at the Prince of Wales to good old-fashioned Western barbecue at Glacier Park Lodge.

One of the long-standing traditions at the lodges is the hiring of college students from across the country to work at the hotels. The wait staff, cooks and entertainers employed are students majoring in hotel/restaurant management, culinary arts, travel/tourism, accounting and music and theatre. All of the restaurants are designated non-smoking, dress is casual, and reservations are not accepted.

Glacier Park Lodge, East Glacier

The Great Northern Steak and Rib House. A Western theme dominates here with a menu featuring beef, barbecued ribs, chicken and fish entrees. The restaurant features a full buffet for breakfast, a luncheon carvery, and for dinner, either a Western buffet or a la carte options. Breakfast: 6:30 to 9:30 a.m.; Lunch: 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Dinner: 5 to 9:30 p.m.

The Lounge. Featuring a big-screen TV and a well-stocked bar, this is a popular gathering place after golf, horseback riding or hiking. A bar menu featuring appetizers and sandwiches is also available. Open 11:30 a.m. to midnight, bar menu available 2 to 10:00 p.m.

Many Glacier Hotel, Swiftcurrent Lake

Ptarmigan Dining Room. This Swiss-styled chalet is a favorite of visitors. The main dining room continues with the Swiss theme and features magnificent views of the mountains soaring above Swiftcurrent Lake. The restaurant features a breakfast buffet, a luncheon carvery and Continental and American a la carte options for dinner. Breakfast: 6:30 to 9:30 a.m.; Lunch: 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Dinner: 5 to 9:30 p.m.

Heidi's. Located right off of Swiftcurrent Lake, Heidi's serves hot dogs, snacks, pastries and drinks for refreshment after boating or hiking. Open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Swiss and Interlaken Lounge. Fully stocked bar located on the lobby level featuring huckleberry daiquiris and Montana microbrews. The Interlaken Lounge overlooks the lake, making it a scenic place to relax with a drink from the bar. A bar menu featuring appetizers and sandwiches is also available. Bar service 11:30 a.m. to midnight, bar menu available 2 to 10:00 p.m.

Lake McDonald Lodge, Lake McDonald

Cedar Dining Room. The lodge was originally built as a hunting lodge, and the dining room preserves the building's history with its rough-hewn beams and hunting trophies. Fine American dining with a taste of the outdoors. Full buffet breakfast and a la carte lunch are also served. Breakfast: 6:30 to 9:30 a.m.; Lunch: 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Dinner: 5 to 9:30 p.m.

Russell's Trail's End Family Restaurant. This family-style restaurant features a casual atmosphere with a la carte breakfast, lunch and dinner selections. Open 6:30 to 10:30 a.m./11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. (Hours may vary in early and late seasons.)

Stockade Lounge. A cozy bar with cedar-paneled walls overlooking Lake McDonald. A bar menu is available featuring appetizers and sandwiches. Open 11:30 a.m. to midnight, bar menu available 2 to 10:00 p.m.

Prince of Wales Hotel, Waterton Lakes Park

Garden Court Dining Room. Often called "the most photographed hotel in North America," the Prince of Wales has a dramatic view of Waterton Lakes. The dining room offers a buffet breakfast, and traditional English fare and fine Continental cuisine for lunch and dinner. Breakfast: 6:30 to 9:30 a.m.; Lunch: 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Dinner: 5 to 9:30 p.m.

Valerie's Tea Room. Traditional English High Tea is served every afternoon in the hotel lobby overlooking Waterton Lake. Enjoy the selection of homemade pastries and scones, berries and Devonshire cream. Tea: 2 to 4:30 p.m.

Windsor Lounge. A fully stocked bar with panoramic views of Waterton Lakes. The bar features a menu with appetizers and sandwiches. Open 11:30 a.m. to midnight, bar menu available 2 to 10:00 p.m.

Swiftcurrent Motor Inn, Many Glacier Valley

Italian Gardens Restaurant. Casual dining with an Italian flair for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Design your own pizza or create your own specialty pasta. Open: Breakfast: 6:30 to 10:30 a.m.; Lunch and Dinner: 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Rising Sun Motor Inn, Near St. Mary Lake

Two Dog Flats Grill. This family-style restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, and features sandwiches, salads, steaks and fish. Open: 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.;11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. After September 8, 7 to 10:30 a.m.;11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
