IRVING, Texas (July 29, 1998)...The Irving Convention and
Visitors Bureau (ICVB) has been recognized with a sixth consecutive Gold
Service Award by Meetings & Conventions magazine, one of the most respected
publications in the meetings industry. The award program, now in its 15th
year, is the industrys highest recognition of excellence, and is granted
to those convention and visitor bureaus that have demonstrated professionalism
and dedication in their service to the magazines readers.
CVBs act not only as information sources, but as partners in
the creation of meetings designed to fit planners specific requirements,
says Bernard W. Schraer, Meetings & Conventions publisher. Our
readers, more than 76,000 corporate, incentive and association meeting
planners, decided on who they thought were truly the best.
Selections were made based upon the following criteria: overall professionalism
and helpfulness of staff; advice on hotels and site inspections; assistance
with ground transportation planning; guidance on local attractions and
facilities; liaison with local vendors and services.
The dramatic growth and successes of Irvings hotel community, our
ideal location in the heart of Dallas/Fort Worth and the tremendous resources
our city has to offer meeting planners give the Bureaus staff a wonderful
story to tell, says Maura Gast, co-acting executive director for the ICVB.
Our staff has made service a top priority, and I am delighted to see that
we are significantly impacting our target audience in a very positive way.

Smaller Means Better
and More Unique Meetings in Irving, TX
IRVING, Texas...While most cities and hotels seem only to be concerned
about meetings of thousands, the 10 meeting hotels in Irving, Texas, the
heart of the Texas Metroplex, have their sites set on something smaller.
"We pay particular attention to groups of 10 to 1,000 because that's
the ideal market for our properties," says John Cychol, director of sales
for the Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau. "Those groups are definitely
big time to us."
The Bureau's strong emphasis on small to medium-sized meetings, coupled
with unique and varied meeting facilities, makes this urban environment
an ideal choice for trade shows and meetings looking for something distinctive
and attentive.
The Irving Arts Center was first discovered as a location treasure by
television talk show host Oprah Winfrey, who hosted her show live from
the IAC in 1991. Bob Barker's "Price Is Right" held spokes model competitions
at the Center in the spring of 1994, emceed by Rod "Come On Down" Roddy.
Groups such as Microsoft, GTE, Delta Air Lines and the Dallas/Fort Worth
Tourism Council frequently use the Center for meetings and programs.
The Arts Center offers meeting rooms to accommodate up to 95 people.
In addition, the facility boasts two state-of-the-art theaters. The Dupree
Theater, with a 78' x 39' stage, seats 253. The Carpenter Performance Hall,
with an 88' x 49' stage, seats 712. The lobbies and connecting outdoor
gardens offer additional space for receptions, business mixers and other
events.
An increasingly popular location for events is Texas Stadium, known
around the world as the home of the Super Bowl Champion Dallas Cowboys.
Its famed "sunroof" makes the perfect skylight for a scenic Texas sunset.
This truly distinctive setting is ideal for the sports enthusiast, company
competitions or any other kind of meeting. Organizations such as IBM, Frito-Lay,
Oldsmobile and the American Cancer Society have all lined up meetings on
the Stadium's 50-yard line. Texas Stadium also offers the Stadium Club,
with 11,375 square feet of meeting space, elevated at the end zone with
an entire wall of glass facing the Cowboys playing field. The Writers'
Press Box, measuring 1,500 square feet, is available for smaller events.
And an outdoor tent, The Corral, provides 11,500 square feet of space for
larger daytime and casual evening affairs.
Irving's ideal location between Dallas and Fort Worth and adjacency
to D/FW International Airport provides convenience to the meeting planner
and traveler from the start. A quick flight into Irving (within three hours
of most major cities), brings travelers within 10 minutes of Irving's 50
hotels, including the 10 meeting properties. The hotels, most under 10
years old, range from luxury five-star resort to moderate all-suite to
budget properties. The city offers more than 7,200 sleeping rooms and more
than 200,000 square feet of meeting space for groups of 10 to 1,000.
