The San Diego Princess Resort Make-A-Wish Golf Tournament has grown
from a fledgling local charity event to the most prolific fund-raising
activity for the Make-A-Wish Foundation
of San Diego. The tournament has
gained both regional and national attention for its success in producing
a premier fund-raising event. The annual event is now the top producing
golf tournament for Make-A-Wish nationwide. Over the past ten years,
the
tournament has generated nearly $700,000, which has gone directly to
granting the wishes of more than 140 children with life-threatening illnesses
in the San Diego area. All aspects of the tournament, which has
become a labor of love for all Princess employees, are completely staffed
and serviced by volunteer employees of the San Diego Princess Resort.
Among an array of sports memorabilia auctioned off at the tournament
on June 29, 1998, will be autographed official Super Bowl XXXII footballs.
During the week's festivities surrounding Super Bowl XXXII in San Diego,
Hall-of-Fame Quarterbacks Joe Namath and Bart Starr spent time visiting
the tropical grounds of the San Diego Princess Resort to lend support for
the resort's 11th Annual Make-A-Wish Golf Tournament. Namath and
fellow
Hall-of-Famer and Super Bowl MVP, Bart Starr contributed signed footballs
to this year's event. "We are certainly honored to have two football
legends contribute to our effort to help these kids. Signed sports
memorabilia is always a top producer in the silent auction," notes Steve
Gaspari, Tournament Director and Hotel Manager.
The primary goal of the Make-A-Wish Tournament is to generate funds that will go directly to brightening the lives of children with life-threatening illnesses in the San Diego area. Local San Diegans and participants from across the country have the opportunity to experience the heartwarming joy of a community joined together and enabling special children's dreams to come true, in addition to having a very rewarding and enjoyable day.
For over ten years, the staff and management of the San Diego Princess
Resort have been successful in carrying out their desire to develop a venue
to make a meaningful and rewarding contribution to the local community,
especially to its children. When the resort first introduced the
tournament in 1987, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego was only in
its second year of operation and had very little experience with fund-raising
activities. The Princess Resort viewed a partnership with Make-A-Wish
as the most beneficial means for making an impact on the lives of local
children. The Foundation is dedicated to granting the special wishes
of children under the age of 18 with a life threatening illness.
Special wishes provide the children and their families with loving memories
of joy and laughter in contrast to their daily life of hospitals, therapy
and treatment programs. It is a time of love, care, family and fun.
Celebrating over 35 years of excellence and two-time recipient of the
Finest Service Awards presented by the San Diego Convention and Visitors
Bureau, the San Diego Princess Resort is a 44-acre tropical island paradise
located at 1404 West Vacation Road, San Diego, CA 92109.
