New 85-room Hampton Inn & Suites Hotel Planned for Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin

Groundbreaking Slated for July 2013 with Completion Planned for May 2014

By Chris Vetter, The Leader-Telegram, Eau Claire, Wis.McClatchy-Tribune Regional News

April 17, 2013--CHIPPEWA FALLS -- A Hampton Inn & Suites hotel is planned for the southeast corner of Chippewa Falls along the Business Highway 29 corridor, and it could be open by next spring.

Developer John Bernhardt said the 85-room, four-story building would be 54,000 square feet. Total cost of the project, including purchase of the land, construction and development costs, are estimated at $7.7 million.

"It should be a prominent landmark as you take the off-ramp into the city," Bernhardt told the Chippewa Falls City Council on Tuesday.

He is hoping to get his franchise request granted soon and break ground, with a goal of being open in spring 2014.

Bernhardt said there is a need for another hotel in the area.

"It's near business parks and the hospital, as well as Leinenkugel's and the Northern Wisconsin State Fair," he said.

Bernhardt is asking the city to extend Chippewa Mall Drive and make it a frontage road. Chippewa Mall Drive ends at the Northridge Center. If extended, it would connect the hotel with the mall, which houses the Micon Cinemas theater and several nearby restaurants.

"It will make it easier to navigate that area of town," Bernhardt said. "Hilton was pleased to hear this was a possibility."

The council agreed to look at funding options to pay for the frontage road, which would cost about $656,000, city records show. The project is eligible for tax-increment financing dollars. The frontage road is contingent on the hotel project moving forward.

Mayor Greg Hoffman said he's pleased to see development begin along the Chippewa Crossing corridor.

"There is tremendous excitement over this project," Hoffman said.

n The council heard an update on the new $4.5 million Short Elliott Hendrickson headquarters, which will be constructed at the corner of River and North Bridge streets downtown.

Architect Jody Andres said the two-story, 21,000-square-foot office will be mostly brick and will blend in with the look of the older downtown buildings. The company now has 55 employees who will work downtown.

Groundbreaking is slated for July 8, with a completion date of May 2014.

n The council gave Council President CW King a ceremonial key to the city. King did not seek re-election to the council this year after serving on the council the past four years.
