McLean, Va. (Oct. 4, 2012) – The Foundation of the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI ) today announced it has awarded its annual scholarship to two students working toward careers in the hospitality industry. Since 1983, the HSMAI Foundation has awarded scholarships to beneficiaries who have shown great ambition and promise within the hospitality field. “The HSMAI Foundation is proud our scholarship funding throughout the years has helped fuel the dreams of many future hospitality sales and marketing professionals as they complete their undergraduate and graduate work and enter the industry better equipped not only to face the business challenges, but develop the skills needed to become tomorrow’s hospitality leaders,” said Fran Brasseux, executive director of HSMAI Foundation. The 2012 recipients of the merit scholarships, sponsored by American Express, are Shouma Ian Moniz and Matthew Stone, who is also the recipient of this year’s Mike Dimond Scholarship. Matthew Stone is completing his doctorate in tourism marketing at Texas A&M University, holds a master’s in hospitality management from the University of Houston and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Illinois. Stone spent 12 years as a hotel manager with Interstate Hotels & Resorts and Adam’s Mark Hotels, has sat as a panelist for HSMAI’s Hotel Sales Strategy Conference and was honored as HSMAI Washington Chapter’s Rising Star in 2008. In addition, Stone is this year’s recipient for the Mike Dimond Scholarship. This scholarship is in its fourth year and is exclusively reserved for graduate students. Stone has been quoted by USA Today, Smart Money, and L.A. Times, among others, regarding his consumer travel expertise. Stone is pursuing a career as a professor in order to help educate future hospitality and tourism professionals. Shouma Ian Moniz currently is attending the University of California, Davis - Graduate School of Management Part-Time Master of Business Administration. He holds bachelor’s degrees in economics and international relations with a minor in Japanese from the University of California, Davis. Moniz held a number of student leadership positions during his undergraduate studies and continues to pursue various service projects within the community. Moniz is currently a Regional Sales Manager for a major hotel brand and seeks to progress his understanding of business in order to carry out his career goals in the hospitality industry. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in a hospitality curriculum, have related work experience, intend to attain a career in hospitality sales, marketing or revenue management, and have good academic standing.
