The California Coastal Commission on Thursday approved the $100 million waterfront project that calls for a new three-level, 35,000-square-foot ballroom and 35,000-square-foot exhibit hall. That's about 14,000 square feet smaller than what was originally planned, a change forced by concerns raised about it encroaching too much into the walkway between it and the neighboring Manchester Grand Hyatt. The new 68-foot tall Marriott Hall will offer roughly triple the meeting space of the existing structure, which will be torn down. "We have to redesign the whole building because we’ve made compromises on preserving the view corridor and reducing the size of the meeting hall," said General Manager Tuni Kyi. "This creates the only opportunity, along a one-mile section between the convention center and Seaport Village, to have unobstructed public access from Harbor Drive to the bay."
