Educational Institute Offers New Edition of Club Management Textbook

Lansing, Michigan, July 2012—The new edition of Contemporary Club Management, published by the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (EI), introduces readers to the complex world of private club management as a specialized area of hospitality.

Edited by Joe Perdue, CCM, CHE, and Jason Koenigsfeld, Ph.D., CHE, for the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA), the third edition of Contemporary Club Management covers a wide range of topics of concern to those working in private clubs, including club governance, membership marketing, club food and beverage operations, golf operations, and training/professional development. The third edition features two new chapters.  “Effective Communication for Club Managers” covers common communications challenges; speaking, writing, and listening; important workplace communication issues; and technology and communication. “Club Facility Management” provides an overview of facility management responsibilities at a private club, including sustainability, building projects, and quality assessments.

Other updated content in the third edition includes new information on leadership, motivational theories, and goal management; a discussion of online training; a look at the future of club food and beverage operations; and a new section on the role of golf professionals in marketing clubs.

Perdue is executive director of Global Hospitality Initiatives for the Cecil B. Day School of Hospitality Administration, Georgia State University. He previously served on the faculty of the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.  He is academic advisor for the Club Managers Association of America and is a past director of education and vice president of CMAA.  Koenigsfeld is senior vice president of professional development for CMAA.  He has worked at private clubs in Florida, Georgia, and Colorado.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management from UNLV, and master and doctoral degrees in hospitality from Auburn University.

“A growing number of university hospitality programs are offering a club course as part of their curriculum and this book provides the perfect resource for students interested in a club management career.” stated Perdue, who noted that there are more than 50 CMAA student chapters at colleges throughout the United States. “The book is also useful for club managers, because it covers the areas defined as critical competency areas for managers of all types of club operations.”
