than 130,000 people headed to downtown San Diego in July for Comic-Con,
many of them staying overnight in hotels throughout the county. — K.C. Alfred July was a very good month for San Diego hotels, lifting room rates and revenues by 6 percent over a year ago, but some rival destinations posted even more impressive results, new statistics reveal. Helped by three citywide conventions in July, including the mega Comic-Con confab, San Diego saw revenues per room rise to $136.92, a 6 percent increase over last year's $129.16, according to Smith Travel Research, which tracks hotel performance throughout the U.S. In Anaheim, hotel revenues rose by nearly 7 percent, no doubt helped by the debut in June of Cars Land at Disneyland's California Adventure park, while San Francisco's hotel revenues soared by 11.5 percent. "Room rates have been improving, we’ve gotten a great response from the new (British Airways) flight from Europe, and there’s a lot more activity in the whole economy," said Mike Staples, general manager of the Catamaran hotel and vice president of the San Diego County Hotel-Motel Association."
