June 21, 2012--HALLANDALE BEACH -- City commissioners late Wednesday night gave the go ahead to a $90 million, 31-story hotel/condo on Hallandale Beach Boulevard at the southwestern base of the Intracoastal drawbridge. Beachwalk is designed to have 84 residential units and 216 hotel suites that could be rented as 432 hotel units by dividing each suite in two. Although the site isn't zoned for it, commissioners gave special approval for 84 residential units there; gave the developer a half-acre sliver of land next to the site and agreed to let the project move forward with 167 fewer parking spaces than city code requires. The city would get an estimated $531,000 in annual property taxes, as well as $3.6 million in other developer contributions. The developer, The Related Group, agreed to make $2.5 million in improvement to the city's North Beach Park, including a 180-seat indoor/outdoor restaurant, before building the hotel. ___ (c)2012 the Sun Sentinel (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)
