Jan. 20, 2012--A York-based company is building another hotel in the Hershey area. Springwood Hospitality LLC, North George Street, recently bought the former Derry Township municipal building on Hockersville Road and plans to build a 108-room Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott on the roughly 3-acre site. Springwood Hospitality purchased the property through the Derry Township Industrial and Commercial Development Authority in November for $1.1 million. The sale of the land helped boost the 2012 budget for the township because the land has been vacant since the municipal offices were moved into the new 77,255-square-foot facility at 600 Clearwater Road, just off Hersheypark Drive, in May 2007. It's the second hotel in the Hershey area for Springwood in recent years. In 2008, the company built an 86-room hotel -- the Country Inn & Suites At the Park at Route 39 and Grandview Drive -- in South Hanover Township, within a mile of Hersheypark. Derry Township's Board of Supervisors have given the hotel plan conditional approval. But before Springwood Hospitality can proceed with construction, it must record the plan, a Department of Community Development official said.
