Venture into any one of San Diego’s more upscale hotels and it’s likely you’ll find one or more concierges on staff, goodwill ambassadors of sorts dedicated to fulfilling a guest’s every whim. Their jobs, they confess, can border on the mundane, responding to requests as prosaic as making dinner reservations or mapping out driving directions to SeaWorld. But the true test of their ingenuity and resourcefulness comes when they’re asked to plot out an unforgettable marriage proposal (picture a retired Navy SEAL swimming up onto the beach to deliver an engagement ring), track down a dentist to replace a missing tooth or, say, negotiate the purchase of a dozen Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Hotel concierges are sometimes called upon to fulfill very challenging requests -- for anniversaries, proposals, birthdays, or just because.
