News for the Hospitality Executive |
Miami—October 18, 2011—Next month, hotels using MTech's HotSOS (pronounced hot sauce) for managing workflows and tracking/reporting guest incidences and requests will be able to create preventive maintenance work orders to run faucets in rooms that remain vacant for a specified number of days in order to protect against Legionellosis. This form of pneumonia, more commonly known as Legionnaire's Disease, can easily be contracted by hotel guests over the age of 50 who smoke or suffer from lung disease or a weakened immune system and who come in contact with stagnant water that has remained in sink pipes. According to a recent article in The Baltimore SunMcClatchy-Tribune Regional News, guests at an Ocean City hotel this month were voluntarily relocated after three people who stayed there were hospitalized with Legionnaire's Disease. The 181-room hotel closed during that period of time in order to test the water system and address any issues. "Stagnant water can be a serious issue for hotels and its guests," said Luis Segredo, MTech President. "Legionella bacteria, which is naturally found in most water systems, can easily be aspirated by guests when taking hot showers or enjoying a soak in the hot tub if the pipes were not flushed regularly. Because HotSOS interfaces with many of the market’s most popular PMS systems, it was only logical for us to extend this functionality to our customers. This functionality, available in the next release of HotSOS scheduled in the next few months, will allow properties to ensure that no unused room contains stagnant water within its bathroom sinks."
