forecasts, the seminar
lineup at Boutique Design New York (BDNY) will present insight from top
hospitality designers, hoteliers and others, November 13-14, 2011, at
New York
City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. “Beyond the new products and resources found on the show floor, education will further enhance the BDNY experience by offering valuable industry insight,” said Michael Schneider, publisher of hospitality brands for ST Media Group. “Timely topics addressed by notable speakers will foster professional development and make this a seminar program not to be missed.” Kicking off Sunday, November 13, from Noon – 1:00pm, “Local Heroes: High-Profile Renovations with a Sense of Place” will address today’s sophisticated travelers and the need to renovate boutique properties to create a sense of place. Using the Four Seasons Los Angeles at Beverly Hills and Kimpton’s new Hotel Monaco in Philadelphia as examples, this panel will feature representatives of these properties and their respective design firms, including Dana Kalczak, Vice President of Design, Four Seasons; Sue Firestone, Founder & Chairman, SFA Design; Ave Bradley, Vice President of Design, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants; and Todd-Avery Lenahan, Founder, ABA Design Studio. “Future Forecast” with Stacy Garcia, world renowned designer and trend forecaster, will follow on Sunday afternoon from 2:00 – 3:00pm, discussing upcoming trends, colors and influences that will impact the hospitality industry. In addition, she will provide an explanation of each trend featured in the Trend Walk, a showcase of five future design trends showcased within the connecting corridor between BDNY and the adjacent International Hotel, Motel + Restaurant Show® (IHMRS). Monday, November 14 seminars begin with “How to Land Your Next Commission” from 11:00am – Noon, featuring an insiders’ look at why leading hotel owners and operators say “yes” to some proposals, and “next” to others. Geared towards hospitality designers, this session will provide a roadmap for making presentations, discuss development plans, and how hotel architecture and design are changing in response to consumer preferences. Panelists include Brad Wilson, COO, Denihan Hospitality Group; Laurence Geller, President & CEO, Strategic Hotels Capital; Brendan McNamara, Senior Vice President; Brand Development/Brand Development/Sales, HHR/VCH/Dream Hotels; and Bill Reynolds, Senior Manager Director, Marcus Corporation. “Making the Most of Social Media: An On-the-Job Primer” follows on Monday from 12:30 – 1:30pm, addressing the roles that Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter play in the worlds of interiors designers. Discussed among a panel of cyber-savvy experts, the conversation will include when, where, how and why interior designers should present themselves on social media. Speakers include Barbara DeLollis, Writer, USA Today; Phoebe Stein, President, Phoebe Stein Public Relations; and Rebecca Goldberg, Partner, Post+Beam. Rounding out the Monday lineup is “Sense and Sensibility: Evolving the Guest Experience”, taking place from 2:00-4:00pm. Presented by the International Interior Designers Association (IIDA) – New York chapter, this program will address what influences the guest experience in a rapidly changing world of global brands, new technologies and endless options. High tea, coffee and desserts will follow. CEU’s provided for this course include 0.1 IDCEC CEU and AIA LU 1.0. Speakers are Tony Machado, Senior Associate, BBG-BBGM; Matt Turner, Editor, Sleeper Magazine; Randall Stone, Senior Partner and Director of Customer Experience, Lippincott; and Matoula Karagiannis, Design Manager, Global Design, Wyndham Hotels. BDNY seminars are free of charge with show registration. The IIDA program is $15 for members, $25 for non-members and $10 for students and educators, and includes admission to BDNY and IHMRS. BDNY will run Sunday, November 13, and Monday, November 14, 2011, featuring more than 200 manufacturers of high-end, unique and innovative design products for hospitality, including furniture, lighting, wall coverings, fabric, seating, accessories, artwork, carpet and flooring, materials, bath and spa. The fair will draw some 5,000 interior designers, architects and purchasing executives, along with crossover participation from hospitality property owners and operators in attendance at the adjacent International Hotel, Motel + Restaurant Show® (IHMRS). The 96th annual IHMRS will run Saturday, November 12, through Tuesday, November 15, 2011, at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Following a full day of conference and networking activities on Saturday, November 12, the IHMRS will feature three full days of exhibits from Sunday, November 13, through Tuesday, November 15. The market presents some 700 hospitality industry suppliers and attracts 30,000 in total trade attendance.
