Pillar Hotels and Resorts Terminating Management Contract with Seven
Pennslyvania Hotels; New Management Company Not Yet Named

By Patrick O'Shea, Beaver County Times, Pa.McClatchy-Tribune Regional News

Nov. 22, 2011--A Texas-based hotel management firm's decision to drop the Holiday Inn in Big Beaver has left the fate of the hotel and its employees in the next year in question.

Pillar Hotels and Resorts has told the Department of Labor and Industry that seven hotels the company operates in Pennsylvania, including the Holiday Inn location off the Beaver Valley exit of the Turnpike, will have their management contracts terminated as of Dec. 31.

The notice said up to 420 jobs could be lost because of the move; it is unclear how many of those jobs would be at the Big Beaver Holiday Inn.

Local representatives of the hotel, which opened in 1964, said they could not comment on the situation.

But a spokeswoman for the Irving, Texas, management company said some of the employees could be retained when a new management firm takes over.

Jolynda Ward, senior vice president of employee services for Pillar Hotels, said "a new management company has not been named yet. However, it is anticipated that the new management company will solicit employment applications from the existing employee base."

She had no further comment on how close a new management firm is to being named and what happens to the affected hotels if a transition does not occur before the end of the year.

Once the change occurs, however, it is expected the hotel will remain a Holiday Inn.

Sherry Telford, a spokeswoman for Intercontinental Hotels Group of Atlanta, the owner of the Holiday Inn franchise, said the franchise agreements would not be affected by a management change because they are independently owned and operated.

Pillar Hotels manages 233 hotels in 37 states, according to its website. Other hotels affected by its management agreement termination are the Holiday Inns in Uniontown, Indiana, Clarion and York, the Four Points Greensburg and the Courtyard Bensalem near Philadelphia.
