Five Students Recognized for Collegiate Achievements and Promising Futures in Hospitality

MCLEAN, VA (Sept. 29, 2011) – Recognizing exceptional students since 1983, the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI) Foundation has awarded its annual scholarships to five college students pursuing careers in the hospitality industry. HSMAI Foundation scholarship recipients have achieved great success in the hospitality field, including recent recipients who are in current roles with industry leaders such as Ritz Carlton, Marriott, TIG Global and InterContinental Hotels Group.

“This year’s Foundation scholarship recipients have exemplified a thorough knowledge, passion and devotion to the hospitality industry,” said Susan Thronson, Chair, HSMAI Foundation and Senior Vice President Global Marketing, Marriott International. “The HSMAI Foundation is proud to make an investment in the future of the industry by providing scholarships to these five students who each have promising futures in the field.”

Garvey has interned with the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau in the Convention Services Department, as well as the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce in Connecticut. She has held a number of student leadership positions in organizations within the school of tourism and hospitality management at Temple University, including serving as president of the Temple University Collegiate Chapter of HSMAI.

Katie Tolman is majoring in marketing and hospitality management at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla. Tolman has interned for the Blackburn for Congress campaign, and as a digital marketing intern at Cendyn. She is a member of many organizations at FAU including the Hospitality Management Society, the University Scholars program and Alpha Xi Delta sorority.

Jacob Youngblood, Jacob A. Youngblood is completing a double major in hospitality management and business administration from the University of Wisconsin - Stout. He is co-president of the collegiate chapter of HSMAI and has maintained full-time employment in hospitality throughout his university career.  Upon graduation, Jacob aspires to a career in hotel marketing and would like to work internationally.
