HEI Hotels & Resorts Names Three General Managers;
Dave Baxter, Daniel Bettencourt and Tom Mulroy

NORWALK, Conn., June 27, 2011—HEI Hotels & Resorts (HEI), the nation’s fastest growing private owner/operator of hotel real estate, today announced three general manager appointments.
  • Dave Baxter was appointed general manager of the recently renovated, 267-room Sheraton Austin at the Capital in Austin, Texas.
  • Daniel J. Bettencourt joined HEI as hotel manager for the 167-suite Embassy Suites Orlando Downtown in Florida.
  • Tom Mulroy returned to HEI as general manager of the 250-room Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Airport and Cruise Port Hotel, also in Florida.
“These appointments reflect HEI’s commitment to recognize and reward outstanding talent within our own organization and to seek out proven leaders from throughout the industry,” said Ted Darnall, chief operating officer.  “All three of these general managers have outstanding track records of creating exceptional customer and associate satisfaction, while positively impacting the hotel’s financial performance.  That kind of success is what HEI management is known for, and I’m confident that these individuals will carry on that tradition.”

Dave Baxter

Before joining HEI in July 2005, Dave’s 35-year career in hospitality had taken him across the country, restoring solvency to the Westin William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, launching the hotel component of iDine Rewards network and overseeing $15 million in renovations at the Doubletree Hotel at the Entrance to Universal Orlando.  With HEI, Dave was the general manager of the Sheraton Norfolk, Va. and most recently, he was general manager of the Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Airport.

Dan Bettencourt
Dan’s 14-year hospitality career started in food and beverage, where his talents quickly earned him a high-profile position as the catering operations manager for the Washington Convention Center.  With Weingardner & Hammons Hotels, he served a two-year assignment as general manager of the Embassy Suites Williamsburg, where his skillful leadership elevated the hotel’s performance to the brand’s top 30 percent.  He also managed a $3.2 million renovation of the property, establishing his credentials for his next assignment: opening the Springhill Suites Hampton Coliseum in 2007.  Before joining HEI this year, Dan was the assistant general manager at the Hilton Garden Inn in center city Philadelphia.

Tom Mulroy
A returning alumnus, Tom joined HEI as director of services for the Marriott in Boca Raton, Fla. in 2000.  He gained additional experience with upscale hotels as director of rooms for the Fort Lauderdale Grande Hotel and Yacht Club.  Prior to his return to HEI, Tom was with The Procaccianti Group as general manager of the Renaissance Boca Raton Hotel and the Marriott Palm Beach Gardens.   His years of experience in eastern Florida made him a natural choice for the general manager’s position at the Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Airport and Cruise Port Hotel.
