Renovated University Place at Underground in Downtown Atlanta - the First-ever
Adaptive Re-use Project for the Comfort Suites Brand
Atlanta and Silver Spring, Md. (January, 2011) – Downtown Atlanta’s first Comfort Suites hotel opened late last month, steps away from historic Underground Atlanta and the MARTA Station. The hotel is owned by developer Atlanta Underground, LLC and co-owned by management company Excel Hotel Group and restoration/renovation company S&A Industries. The property is franchised by Choice Hotels International, Inc. (NYSE: CHH).
Located at 54 Peachtree Street, the Comfort Suites Atlanta Downtown/Convention Center hotel will be the first within the 6,000-property Choice Hotels franchise family to come to downtown Atlanta. The 156-room hotel is housed in a historic building. Its lower five floors were originally built more than a century ago, and 11 floors were added for Atlanta’s 1996 Summer Olympics.
This downtown Atlanta lodging will be one of the most unique projects in the 636-hotel Comfort Suites brand portfolio, being the brand’s first adaptive reuse project. A multi-million-dollar renovation has kept the building’s historic exterior intact. The 100-percent custom project was influenced by the collaborative effort taking into account the historic building as well as the vibrancy of downtown Atlanta. The project was officially announced earlier last year in June, at which point the renovation process began.
“As a collective ownership group we are excited about the opportunity to own and manage the first Comfort Suites property in downtown and we’re confident that our travelers as well as the local community here will love what this hotel has to offer,” said Neil Patel of Excel Hotel Group, co-owner of the future Comfort Suites hotel. “Comfort Suites is exactly the kind of contemporary and thoughtfully-designed hotel brand that’s perfect for this growing area of Atlanta’s downtown.”
The design, also unique for Comfort Suites, has a distinct urban aesthetic. The artwork draws its inspiration from downtown Atlanta. With a color palette reflecting its art, the hotel décor features soothing creams, browns, amber and teal. Suites are larger than the industry standard, with separate bedroom and living areas. Each of the elegantly appointed rooms will have a marble-topped wet bar, sleeper sofa, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen LCD television, desk and pillow-top mattress with crisp white duvet and amber bed scarf.
Additionally, the Comfort Suites Atlanta Downtown hotel will house a bar/lounge, 1,500 square feet of meeting space, business center, fitness center and VIP floors. Along with free Wi-Fi, the hotel will provide complimentary breakfast, local calls, and shuttle service for guests to such local points of interest as the convention center, aquarium and nearby restaurants.
