Florida International University School of Hospitality and Tourism Management
Student, Sagine Delly, Wins Two National Scholarships

The 2010 Arthur J. Packard Memorial Scholarship by the
American Hotel and Lodging Educational Foundation (AH&LEF),
as well as the Ellsworth M. Statler Scholarship of Excellence

NORTH MIAMI, FL (October 11, 2010) – Sagine Delly, a Haitian-American student at Florida International University’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management , has been named the recipient of two prestigious national scholarships.  A rising senior, Delly was recently awarded the Arthur J. Packard Memorial Scholarship by the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Foundation (AH&LEF), as well as the Ellsworth M. Statler Scholarship of Excellence.

The Arthur J. Packard Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to the top three most outstanding students nationwide who are studying lodging management.  As this year’s first-place winner, Delly received $5,000 in scholarship money and a commemorative plaque. The Packard Scholarship began in 1974, by the AH&LEF, to honor Arthur J. Packard’s accomplishments in the lodging industry. Three students at AH&LEF-affliated four-year institutions are selected each year, receiving a total of $10,000.

In addition to the Packard Scholarship, Delly has also been named one of this year’s recipients of the Ellsworth M. Statler Scholarship of Excellence. The Statler Scholarship is presented each year to students who not only thrive in the classroom but outside, through volunteer and community involvement.  As a 2010 winner, Delly received $2,576.

“I felt great, surprised and proud of myself when I found out about these awards,” Delly said. “My education at FIU’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management has provided me with excellent knowledge about the industry and has prepared me to move toward my goal of one day working in management for a boutique hotel company. Both scholarships specifically will give me the financial support I need to complete my bachelor’s degree.”

With the support of her family, Delly moved to the U.S. in July 2006 to pursue her education.  She began studying at Miami Dade College the next year and received her Associate in Arts in May 2009. Delly is currently on track to receive a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management in April 2011 from FIU.

“We are extremely proud of Sagine and on behalf of the entire FIU family, I want to congratulate her on the wonderful accomplishments she has achieved while part of our Hospitality and Tourism Management program,” said Dean Joan Remington. “She is an exemplary student and we are confident that she will be well on her way to a successful future in hospitality upon graduation.”
