Can I Gate Check My Couch?
Survey by Wyndham Vacation Rentals Shows Kitchens, Laundries
Are What Americans Want to Take on the Road

Parsippany, N.J. (January 10, 2011) – Apple computers and mini-bars stocked with cool gadgets are just some of the ideas the hospitality industry has tried in recent years to attract travelers, but the results of a recent national survey* show that what travelers really want is a decent washer and dryer. The findings point to an increase in Americans booking vacation rentals, a nearly $25 billion industry according to PhoCusWright.

Released today by Wyndham Vacation Rentals, part of the Wyndham Worldwide Corporation family of brands (NYSE: WYN), the results of the national survey* conducted to find out what the most important factors are to Americans when booking accommodations reveal that more than half (55 percent) prefer appliances, including refrigerators, washers and dryers. These amenities are traditionally found in rentals, including condos and vacation homes, not hotels.

The survey also reveals that no manner of national monument or museum can replace the desire for extra space or a true “home away from home.” If possible, more than a third (37 percent) would take their living room on the road and more than 60 percent of respondents say they would spend more time in their hotel room if it included a living room.

Long-favored by Europeans, rentals are growing in popularity among American families due to sizable living space and amenities such as fully-equipped kitchens which allow vacationers to control costs in a variety of ways. Don’t want to open the wallet for a pricey breakfast? Make eggs in the morning instead. Want to avoid hefty airline baggage fees? Pack less and throw in a load of laundry at a rental. Allergic to house work? Maid service and other hotel-like services are often available at many rentals.

In the spirit of making things easier for travelers, Wyndham Vacation Rentals has gathered its 20-plus rental brands into one place and is unveiling www.WyndhamRentals.com. Travelers can visit the site to access more than 85,000 vacation rental properties around the globe – everything from villas and houseboats to condos, cottages, campsites and castles. They’ll even find teepees!
