August  28, 2010 - The Hilton Scranton and Conference Center is suing a New Jersey-based travel club for more than $30,000 for alleged unpaid bills.

Filed in Lackawanna County on Aug. 11, the Hilton is suing Getaway Weekend Vacations Inc., also known as Adventure Unlimited, for not paying $34,423.09 in charges incurred from January through April for lodging and other services.

Hilton attorney Brice Paul declined to comment on Friday.

The hotel's general manager, Charlie Shirk, could not be reached for comment. Efforts to reach the Cherry Hill, N.J., company, which also has been the subject of consumer complaints, were unsuccessful.

The Better Business Bureau said it has received 22 complaints in the last 36 months about Getaway Weekend Vacations, including advertising, contract, sales practice, refund and service issues.

Better Business Bureau spokeswoman Melissa Companick said additional information about the complaints was unavailable.

The lawsuit filed by the hotel states Getaway Weekend Vacations provides commercial and recreational group tours.

On Dec. 18, the hotel and travel club entered into a contract in which the hotel would provide lodging and related services to Getaway Weekend Vacations' customers, the lawsuit states.

From January through April, the travel club's customers used the hotel and its facilities, incurring a bal-ance of $34,423.09, for multiple services, including swimming, use of an exercise room, a party with a disc jockey and open bar and buffet breakfasts.

The tour schedule provided for use of 70 rooms during five two-day periods.

The lawsuit states the hotel has provided written invoices, but the company has refused to pay, causing a breach of contract and unjust enrichment.

A hearing on the complaint has not been scheduled.
