EDITORIAL: Celebrating the Center of Tourism;
All That's Missing is a Top Tier Hotel

The Sun Herald, Biloxi, Miss.McClatchy-Tribune Regional News

Aug. 17, 2010--The Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center is well on its way to being the undisputed centerpiece of the state's tourism industry. All that is now lacking is a top tier hotel at the corner of Beach Boulevard and Beauvoir Road to serve as the headquarters for conventions, conferences, meetings and trade shows coming to the Coast.

If you haven't yet seen the results of the Coliseum and Convention Center's $118 million remodeling and expansion, then today is an excellent time to do so. At 5 p.m., a host of dignitaries, including Gov. Haley Barbour, will cut a 50-foot ribbon in the Convention Center's main lobby. Afterwards, the Center's hundreds of thousands of square feet will be open for viewing. To underscore the size of the facility, refreshments and music will be provided at three different locations.

All that is missing is a hotel worthy of such a dazzling complex of meeting and exhibition space. Such a hotel would help the Coast Coliseum and Convention Center book even bigger and better events, which would in turn bring even more business for existing hotels and motels on the Coast.

This is a great asset and every effort must be made to take full advantage of it.
