Drury Hotels Begins $26 million Renovation of the
The Broadview Hotel in Downtown Wichita

April 10, 2010 - --The Broadview Hotel, 400 W. Douglas, will close for renovations April 17, according to information from parent company Drury Hotels.

Work will begin April 19 and the hotel will reopen in eight to 12 months as the Drury Plaza Broadview Hotel. During the renovations, the hotel will have an office in the Garvey Building at 300 W. Douglas, the information indicates.

"It's monumental for downtown," said Larry Weber, president of the Wichita Downtown Development Corp., "especially from the standpoint it's one of the classic downtown buildings.

"We need hotels downtown. It fits everything. It's on one of the Goody Clancy primary paths at Douglas, and it will enhance our walkable areas downtown. It's really good news."

The $26 million Broadview renovation was scheduled to begin in November before the Kansas Legislature's cut in historic tax credits halted it, Drury officials said. The project will cost up to 40 percent more than a similar-size new hotel.

The tax credit program, which is used by developers to renovate historic buildings, would be restored to full funding after July 1 under a bill on the way to Gov. Mark Parkinson's desk.

Last year, legislators capped the program at $3.75 million annually as they struggled to address a budget shortfall, putting historic redevelopment like the Broadview and other Wichita projects in jeopardy or on hold.
