Denihan Hospitality Group to Reopen the Surrey Hotel, New York City
Following $60 million Renovation

DHG Continues Asset Reinvestment After Relaunch of Affinia Shelburne in June.

NEW YORK (October 1, 2009) -  After 12 months and a $60-plus million dollar investment, Denihan Hospitality Group (DHG) will unveil The Surrey Hotel on November 1, 2009, following a meticulous renovation, as a sophisticated and fresh approach to traditional luxury.   Located on East 76th Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues, The Surrey complements its sought-after address with coveted services and amenities, featuring hotel and in-room dining crafted by Daniel Boulud’s Café Boulud, a key-accessed rooftop garden, private spa featuring customized treatments, and new Penthouse and Presidential Suites.

With the addition of 58 keys to the property, The Surrey now offers 190 spacious guest accommodations, including 30 one-bedroom suites, a new 1,150 square-foot Penthouse Suite and the 4,500 sq ft Presidential Suite, all featuring custom Duxiana beds.   As envisioned by architectural designer Lauren Rottet, of Rottet Studio, customized design details reflect the hotel’s surrounding residential, cultural and retail neighbors and resonate throughout the residential-style landmark, from the antique rug design expressed in mosaic tiles in the lobby to window box seats embroidered with poetry such as “through these windows lies the soul of the city” in each guest salon.   Rottet’s use of a refined palette of textures, and hues of cream, silver, gray, light tobacco and black provides a timeless stage for the vibrancy each guest brings to the hotel.

“The renovation and repositioning of The Surrey is a crowning achievement for DHG and will be an ideal complement to our portfolio of managed and owned branded and independent properties,” said Brooke Barrett, co-CEO of DHG.  “Providing a new level of accommodation for today’s luxury traveler, The Surrey will be imbued with the persona of the sophisticated and worldly Upper East Side resident.”

Co-CEO Patrick Denihan commented, “DHG’s reinvestment in The Surrey is a part of our continued drive for growth through reinvestment in our existing hotels, as well as the pursuit of management contracts, acquisitions and joint developments.”

In June of this year, DHG completed a $25 million renovation and repositioning of the Affinia Shelburne, the former Shelburne Murray Hill, which is now the seventh Affinia branded hotel, joining sister properties in New York, Chicago and Washington, D.C.  The Surrey and Affinia Shelburne follow DHG’s $40-plus million renovations and repositioning of both the Affinia Chicago and Affinia’s Liaison Capitol Hill in 2008.

Among The Surrey’s singular features, DHG has expanded its relationship with Café Boulud to include a new 1,200 square-foot lobby-level bar, Bar Pleiades, with seating for approximately 75 people as well as private dining options.  The hotel’s private rooftop garden is available to guests only and will feature butler service for drinks and light meals from Café Boulud.  With five treatment rooms, including two spa suites outfitted with soaking tubs, The Spa at The Surrey complements the hotel’s “tradition with a modern twist” aesthetic by offering signature product lines and services that provide customized, results-centric treatments in a private and soothing environment.

The Penthouse Suite is a contemporary haven, with a wrap-around private terrace with outdoor living space and direct access to the private rooftop garden.  The aptly-named Presidential Suite is among the largest on the Upper East Side, featuring a formal dining area, baby grand piano and residential details such as a fireplace, built-in executive desk, sauna and oversized “his and her” bathroom.

Opening room rates at The Surrey start at $499 for a grand deluxe salon.  For reservations and information, visit www.thesurreyhotel.com.
