Educational Institute's Resort Textbook Has New Name, New Content

Lansing, Michigan, December 2009-The third edition of World of Resorts: From Development to Management, published by the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (EI), reflects the many facets of the global resort industry. Written by Chuck Yim Gee, Dean Emeritus, University of Hawaii at Manoa, School of Travel Industry Management, this textbook explores the resort industry from concept and development to management and operations. In addition, readers will learn about types of resorts, resort history, facilities planning, personnel organization, front and back of the house management, resort marketing and sales, and the future of resorts.

So many changes have taken place in the resort industry in the 20 years since the previous edition of this textbook was published that it could be considered a new book.  Among the changes:
  • A more international focus, reflecting the continuing trend toward globalization, international trade, and international travel and tourism
  • New material describing the handover of a completed resort project from contractor to owner, and from owner to operator, and what happens during the pre-opening and opening stages
  • Discussion of issues affecting resorts, such as changes in world geopolitics, economic and population shifts, environmental priorities, and tourism trends
  • Exploration of the way resorts are adding time-share and condominium elements to increase profitability, and the operational challenges these mixed-use facilities pose for management
  • Discussion of environmentalism and the greening of the resort industry
  • Material covering changes in resort development and financing
  • Discussion of how overbuilding and an excess supply of rooms require resort owners and operators to focus on the fundamentals of market competition, quality service delivery, and long-term profitability beyond real estate transactions.
