.Capella Pedregal, a Dramatic, 66-room Cliffside and Beachside
Resort and Spa, Prepares to Open in Cabo San Lucas

CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO – With an opening date of July 13, 2009, Capella Pedregal, Cabo San Lucas’s long-awaited and highly anticipated new resort, readies for its debut and heralds an unprecedented era of hospitality to the destination.  Anticipation has been percolating for the intimate, beachfront hideaway, which is on track to surpass expectations of even the most discerning travelers.

Boasting a prized and secluded cliffside setting where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez, the intimate Capella Pedregal affords a standard of personalized service no other resort can match.  Upon arrival, guests emerge from a 1,000-foot private tunnel carved through the mountainside to find a breathtaking expanse of azure sky and sea - an exclusive haven just minutes away from lively downtown Cabo, yet seemingly worlds apart.

“Throughout the Capella brand, the guest experience is defined by the desires of the individual, and at Capella Pedregal, each guest feels cared for as if at the home of a treasured friend, with every need anticipated and each wish fulfilled through our ‘sixth sense’ for service,” said General Manager Peter Bowling, who leads a management “dream team” of Capella brand veterans and industry leaders.

Peter Bowling added, “We will always draw from the best local resources to create unforgettable, authentic Mexican experiences based on the guest’s personal interests.” No detail will be overlooked, promises Bowling, including tequila tastings of the most exclusive labels, to be enjoyed with fine cigars on the terrace; star gazing and lunada celebrations on the beach, and an interactive cocina where guests can observe Capella’s expert chefs at work and learn the secrets of fine Baja cuisine.

OWNERS AND DEVELOPERS: Diaz Rivera Family, Co-developers
In 1975, architect, visionary and family patriarch Manuel Diaz Rivera began developing 360-acres of land at the tip of the Baja California peninsula, transforming it into the prestigious neighborhood of Pedregal de Cabo San Lucas. Weary of Mexico City’s urban sprawl, Don Manuel brought his family to Cabo in the 1970s, when it was a small, 900-inhabitant fishing village, in search of a place in which they could work, live and thrive together while building a dream. He purchased the land that would become Pedregal in 1974, recognizing the great potential in its glorious views of both the Sea of Cortez and Pacific Ocean, and sold his first lot in 1978.

Thirty years later, several generations of Diaz Riveras continue to live at Pedregal, each having chosen a favorite vantage point for his or her own home. They have developed the gated community with painstaking care into Cabo’s most exclusive neighborhood.  More than 340 homes have been built along its cobblestone streets, where the charms of old Mexico blend harmoniously with every modern convenience.

Don Manuel groomed his children to continue his legacy and today, the Pedregal dream is actively nurtured through son Manuel and daughter Leticia, all of whom are Executive Board members.  In addition, Don Manuel’s eldest grandson, Juan F. Diaz Rivera, leads the family’s project team developing the community’s last untouched site – 24-acres of breathtaking cliffside and beachfront land, with unrivaled views of the Pacific Ocean and Cabo San Lucas village.  This exclusive site is the future home of Capella Pedregal, a resort development of unprecedented luxury that will include the 66-room Capella Pedregal, 31 shared-ownership Capella Residences, 19 shared and whole ownership Capella Casonas and a sweeping six- bedroom, whole ownership Capella Estate Villa.

The project promises to be the crowning achievement of the Diaz Rivera family. What began as one man’s vision 30-years ago has grown into an enduring family legacy that will thrive for generations to come.

Three Design Teams

At Capella Pedregal, Cabo’s most anticipated new resort and residential destination, three celebrated firms have teamed up to create a resort community that is both visually stunning and in harmony with Cabo’s natural environment.  Compatriots in bringing exceptional earlier projects to life, HKS, Inc. has laid the architectural groundwork, Paul Duesing Partners designed the interiors, and Charles S. McDaniel of The SWA Group is the landscape architect for Capella.  The new development has a dramatic, 66-room cliffside resort and spa, as well as expansive shared- and full-ownership Capella Residences and Casonas.

Capella Pedregal’s enchanting natural environment inspires the design and landscape.  The site encompasses 24 spectacular mountainside and oceanfront acres at the very point where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez, near the legendary rock formations known as Land’s End.  The development is reached via the only privately-owned tunnel in Mexico.  Carved through the heart of the mountainside, it is a 1,000-foot long engineering feat that separates the town of Cabo from the Pacific Ocean.  This incredibly dramatic entrance deposits visitors at Capella Pedregal’s entrance courtyard overlooking an expanse of sea and sky.

HKS, Inc.
Known for creating dramatic and memorable hotel environments, HKS, Inc. specializes in establishing an architectural tone that inspires exceptional interior design and landscaping.

Founded in 1939, HKS, Inc. is one of the largest architectural and engineering firms in the nation with projects ranging from office buildings, banks, sports facilities and retail outlets to more than 23,000 hotel rooms throughout the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean.  Among its impressive international roster of clients is Las Ventanas al Paraiso (Los Cabos), Olympia Resort (Greece), and Atlantis Resort Phase II (Royal Towers, Bahamas).  Executive Vice President and Director Nunzio M. De Santis, AIA, a 21-year veteran of the industry, is spearheading the look of Capella Pedregal, which he feels stretches anew the bounds of traditional resort design.  Mr. De Santis tapped Paul Duesing Partners and The SWA Group for the finishes to interiors and the grounds.

Paul Duesing Partners
One of the world’s most sought-after interior design firms, with more than 25-years of experience, Paul Duesing Partners pioneered the concept of leisure and lifestyle design for an exclusive national and international clientele.  The services of the firm’s seasoned professionals include not only initial concept through final design, but insight into many other structural and creative issues that impact a space.

Capella Pedregal is the latest important addition to Paul Duesing Design’s impressive international portfolio.  Recent projects include Cabo’s One&Only Palmilla Resort and Spa and Las Ventanas al Paraiso, The Four Seasons Santa Barbara Biltmore, and the new Palms Grand Resort and Spa in Turks and Caicos.

Charles S. McDaniel, Senior Principal, The SWA Group
Charles S. McDaniel, senior principal of The SWA Group, spearheads the resort’s landscape architectural design.  With more than 20 years of national and international experience in master planning and landscape architectural design, McDaniel brings a keen sensibility and approach to his work, taking challenges and turning them into the project’s intrinsic opportunities.  This one-time American Institute of Architects “Consultant of the Year” award winner has worked on a variety of other renowned projects such as Hawaii’s Kona Village Resort, Cabo’s Las Ventanas al Paraiso, and The Four Seasons Resort & Club in Irving, TX.

Established in 1957, The SWA Group is a collaborative group practice of urban designers, planners, and landscape architects.  The SWA Group operates out of six offices located in Dallas, Houston, Sausalito, San Francisco, Laguna Beach and Shanghai, and enjoys an international reputation for its commitment to design excellence, social responsibility and environmental sustainability.

Capella Pedregal occupies one of the most coveted parcels of land in Cabo – 24 beachfront acres at the southernmost tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, near the legendary rock formations known as Land’s End.  It is 35 minutes from Los Cabos International Airport, which is serviced by direct flights from numerous major cities in North America.  For more information on Capella Pedregal, please visit or call (800) CAPELLA (227-3552.)
