Sheraton South Padre Island Beach Hotel and Condominiums
Reopens 10 Months After Hurricane Dolly

Renovated Hotel and Adjacent Sapphire Spa and Fitness Center

Provide Entirely New Guest Experience

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TX (May 11, 2009)  Officials with the Sheraton Beach Hotel and Condominiums announced today the completion of a multi-million dollar restoration and the long-awaited reopening of South Padre Island’s only national brand full-service hotel property, and the Island’s largest hospitality employer. Officials also announced the opening of the Island’s first luxury Spa - The Sapphire Spa and Fitness Center.  The Sheraton South Padre Island Beach Hotel and Condominiums was closed on July 24, 2008 after Hurricane Dolly roared ashore causing extreme damage to both the Island and the hotel.

“This has been a relentless team effort by the hotel staff to complete all projects to get the property reopened in time to welcome guests back to our resort, and I am intensely proud of our team,” said Steve Meadows, Executive Vice President of Posadas USA, Inc. who operates the hotel.

Hurricane Dolly was a Category 2 hurricane that parked itself over South Padre Island for nearly eight hours with sustained winds in excess of 120 mph for more than two hours.  The hotel was closed the day after the hurricane.  The hurricane caused major damage to roofs, destroyed much of the hotel’s lush and mature landscaping, caused significant water damage throughout public areas, guest rooms and condos, as well as to furniture and fixtures.

Despite the damage and the lengthy renovation process, Meadows is looking on the bright side.  According to Meadows, “A large part of the staff was retained to assist with the recovery efforts, and most of those who had worked for us prior to the hurricane have been brought back. And we have a sparkling, newly renovated property.  And our guests love the changes.”

As guests arrive they travel down a new driveway of interwoven brick pavers lined by lighted palm trees that lead the way to the hotel’s new porte cochere.  Lush tropical landscaping throughout the property sets the mind to relaxation mode.

The lobby, restaurant and bar, meeting rooms and all guest rooms have been completely renovated as has the landscaping, the pool bar and beach activities building.  In addition, all guest room furniture and bedding has been replaced, and the beds are the plush, nine layer custom-designed Sheraton Sweet Sleeper II Beds.  Every guest room features new flat panel televisions, new cordless telephones, in-room safes and refrigerators.

Also new to the hotel  is the Link@Sheraton, located in the lounge area that offers travelers a convenient on-line experience and the ability to stay connected to work, family and friends while on the road, so that  being out of town doesn't mean being out of touch.

New, Luxury Sapphire Spa & Fitness Center Opens

A resort spa with world class service has opened on South Padre Island inviting guests to step into an island oasis of pleasure and for an Oceanside refuge for body, mind and soul.  The sapphire blue sea outside its doors provides the inspiration for the Sapphire Spa and Fitness Center.

According to Toni Anne Mastroianni, Sapphire Spa Director, “The pristine beauty, endless ocean and fragrant plants of the region are combined with Sapphire Spa’s commitment to provide an unforgettable experience, and our spectacular spa was planned to bring health, pleasure and fun to your visit to the island.”

Mastroianni invites visitors to, “Relax to the rhythm of the waves, breathe the ocean air, experience the healing of local botanicals, marine plants and sea minerals and find tranquility through our caring touch.”

The menu of services provides a distinct sense of our beachside setting, integrating the healing properties of the ocean environment with the traditional remedies of massage, hydrotherapy, and esthetic care.
