Business Travel Flap Could Have Silver Lining for Leisure Travelers

NORWALK, Conn.- February 18, 2009 - Its a challenging time for corporate travel. First there was the faltering economy and layoffs. Then came media reports of lavish company spending on travel events, followed by the Treasury Department calling for firms receiving bailout money to adopt new policies for conferences and events.

Add them all up, and its no surprise that The New York Times reported recently that conference attendance could drop by 12 percent this year, with a 9 percent drop in off-site meetings and corporate events. PKF Hospitality Research reported that, of the top 50 hotel markets it tracks, 40 will see a drop in occupied rooms for 2009.

Business travel cutbacks could have a silver lining for leisure travelers. Leisure travelers who want the most bang for their buck on vacation this year should look to the big cities that traditionally do a lot of business in conventions and corporate events, said Brian Ek of priceline.com (Nasdaq: PCLN). Ek is priceline.coms in-house travel expert and editor of its travel blog www.priceline.com/travelblog/.

Cities to check out would include Las Vegas, New York, New Orleans, Miami, San Francisco, Atlanta, Orlando, Dallas and Washington, DC. In these cities, leisure travelers are likely to find aggressive, consumer-friendly pricing on everything from vacation packages and hotel rooms, to theme park tickets, attractions and restaurants.

Ek said that big city travel bargains are abundant on priceline.com www.priceline.com and its last-minute deals service www.priceline.com/pricebreakers. Here are some examples of the deals currently available.
