Revenue Management for an Uncertain Summer

Carol Verret Web Cast on June 6, 2008

May 28, 2008 - According to Smith Travel Research, RevPAR was up just 1.9 percent through the first quarter of 2008 compared to the same period in 2007.  With poor prospects for summer travel, the second quarter 2008 Hotel Horizons report of PKF Hospitality Research is forecasting an annual increase in RevPAR of just 1.5 percent.  This RevPAR forecast is the result of a projected 2.5 percent decline in occupancy, combined with a 4.0 percent increase in ADR.

Revenue Management in summer 2008 will be different than RM in the past several years.  There is a level of uncertainty about demand, the ability to predict it and the ability to drive rates.  Depending upon which survey you look at, the analysts the projections are mixed will short distance travel balance the negative shift in long road trips of summers past?

What can revenue managers do to fortify their hotels position and minimize negative impact from high gas prices and decreased consumer confidence in the economy?   There is a lot that revenue managers can do  to put strategies in place that they can manipulate depending upon demand levels and short lead bookings,  Says Carol Verret.

In this web cast we will focus on strategies to put in place now before its too late to be effective:

  • Rate versus occupancy managing the competitive environment to avoid a downward rate spiral in rate in the market
  • Forecasting as windows grow shorter, what reports and resources can be accessed to get  realistic  trending on demand in the market
  • Evaluating all channels and developing a strategy to maximize revenue and minimize cost
  • The online Travel Agencies How can you use Expedia , Travelocity, et al, most effectively to sell unused inventory short term
  • RFPs how well are the consortia performing, as we move into negotiation season, what are their forecasts for 2009
Who should attend -- Revenue managers, Directors of Sales and General Managers.  Why? Revenue management is a team sport and this summer will be challenging for the RM team.
