Oct. 9, 2007 - EDWARDSVILLE -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville officials announced today that the lease has been canceled on the highly-publicized multi-million dollar hotel and conference center to be constructed on the school property. Spring Green Lodge was set to open in spring 2006 on the campus' University Park, along Illinois 157. However, construction halted on the project in April 2005 after only eight months of construction. University officials announced today the building site, at the intersection of University Park Drive and 157, is "now available for lease due to the expiration of the Spring Green Lodge Conference Center ground lease," according to a news release. It was not immediately clear why the lease expired. In November, University Park director Jim Pennekamp told the News-Democrat that University Park had leased the land to Spring Green for 69 years, with three 10-year options to renew. "We regret that the conference center project didn't work out," Pennekamp said in today's release. "At the same time we believe that the property offers excellent development potential including high visibility and access to university amenities." Plans for the $7 million Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired lodge included an architecture library and exhibits of art and artifacts from the university museum.
