Sep. 27, 2007 - Michael Goar, a 31-year ski industry veteran who has been executive vice president and general manager at Solitude Mountain Resort, is moving over to the Park City area to become managing director of The Canyons Resort.

Goar has served in a variety of capacities at Solitude since 1981 and has been in charge of overall operations since 1991. In addition, he became chairman of Ski Utah's executive committee when Scott Pierpont, who had been president of The Canyons, departed about the time of the resort's announced sale in mid-July from American Skiing Co. to Talisker Canyons Finance Co.

Vail Inc., which had sought to buy the resort, is challenging the sale to Talisker in a Denver court.

"With my years of experience in the Utah ski industry I am excited to become part of the dynamic Park City market," said Goar, citing the appeal of trying to position The Canyons to be "one of the premier destination resorts in North America."

Solitude does not intend to replace Goar, said resort spokesman Jay Burke. "We have a strong group of senior level directors over all departments and will proceed into the future with this structure," he said. "Mike was a great manager for us and, more importantly, a phenomenal person."

B.J. Fair, American Skiing's president and chief executive, said Goar's "long record of accomplishment at Solitude across operations, marketing and real estate development will serve him well in his new position."

Goar's selection also was applauded by Nathan Rafferty, president of Ski Utah, marketing arm for the state's 13 active resorts. "Working with Mike over the years," he said, "I know him to be one of the ski industry's finest professionals -- in or outside of Utah."

A resident of Draper, where he lives with his wife and three children, Goar will begin his duties at The Canyons on Oct. 15.
