Shaner Hotels Establishes $100,000 Endowed Scholarship at The University
of Delaware Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management
.

STATE COLLEGE, PA (November 19, 2007) - Shaner Hotels has announced that it has established a $100,000 endowed scholarship at The University of Delaware Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management (HRIM). The announcement was made at a special reception and dinner held November 6 at the Courtyard by Marriott Newark-University of Delaware in Newark, DE.

The scholarship is being established in honor of David Hollowell, Executive Vice President and Treasurer of UD, who has been a champion of the university's HRIM program, and a strong advocate for bringing a teaching hotel to the university campus. It is anticipated that the scholarship will be awarded to one or two students in UD's HRIM program each year in the amount of $5,000.

"We are thrilled to be able to provide this unique opportunity to educate and train the next generation of hospitality professionals," said Lance T. Shaner, Chairman and CEO of Shaner Hotels. "This is a very special relationship for Shaner. When we came to this beautiful community five years ago, there was a vision to give students who share our passion the opportunity to participate in the day-to-day operations of a world-class hotel, where they're exposed to the latest technology and best new ideas in customer service."

"It's a beautiful example of what happens when you have a mutually supportive partnership, that becomes successful not only academically, but economically, as well," Shaner continued. "This on-campus hotel is ranked #6 in the entire U.S. out of approximately 800 Courtyard by Marriott properties nationwide."

Shaner Hotels manages the Courtyard by Marriott Newark-University of Delaware hotel, which opened in 2003, under contract to UD.

"It took my breath away when Lance Shaner approached me about establishing an endowed scholarship for our HRIM program," said David Hollowell, who is retiring at the end of 2007. "I can't think of a better way to recognize the success of this program than the creation of a scholarship that will provide the financial support necessary for promising students to benefit from our outstanding faculty and facilities."

Robert Nelson, Ph.D., incoming chairperson of UD's HRIM program said, "Shaner Hotels' generous endowment is a fitting tribute to David Hollowell's efforts to bring a teaching hotel to our campus. Our Courtyard by Marriott Newark-University of Delaware hotel, which is managed by Shaner Hotels, is unique. I do not know of any hotel that integrates hospitality students into its operation as comprehensively as we do at this property. It took a degree of courage from all involved to invest in such a project, but the results have been great."

"We are grateful to Shaner Hotels," Nelson continued. "They have embraced this project from its inception and are terrific partners in the education of our HRIM students. The endowed David Hollowell Scholarship will open these educational opportunities to promising hospitality students for generations to come."

Privately-held Shaner, parent company of Shaner Hotels, is based in State College, PA. It owns and manages diverse holdings in the lodging, investment, energy and professional services sectors.
