Hotel guests vacate Peninsula-Manila, give way to clearing
ops
November
30, 2007 - Manila - Source ABS-CBN News Online - Hotel guests of the Manila
Peninsula in Makati City came in droves on Friday to get the things they
left when they abruptly evacuated the place to make way for police operations
Thursday.
Radio dzMM reported that the guests and those staying at the five-star
hotel were allowed to get their personal belongings from their rooms initially
searched by police.
Members of the Makati Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) arrived and
began checking the 2nd floor of the hotel where the group, led by Sen.
Antonio Trillanes IV and Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim, former head of the Scout
Ranger Regimen, holed out.
The two were protected by around 20 Magdalo soldiers, armed with automatic
assault rifles and explosives.
During the clearing operations, the SWAT team recovered several hand
grenades and weapons in some of the rooms left by the soldiers.
Police also used bomb sniffing dogs to make sure that it was safe for
guests to up to their rooms.
Operations of the hotel have been temporarily suspended due to the ongoing
clearing activities of authorities.
On Thursday, Trillanes and Lim seized the hotel along with some civilians
who supported the groups call for President Arroyo to step down.
Authorities managed to diffuse the situation and arrested the group
after a six-hour standoff.
