Global Warming Crisis

From reports about climate change on The Oprah Show to the surprising popularity of Al Gore’s documentary,“An Inconvenient Truth,” it is clear that more and more Americans are concerned about global warming — and, equally important, they are wondering what they can do to help. 

Amazingly, the reduction of global warming  can start by changing one light bulb at a time. According to Michael Oppenheimer, professor of geosciences and international affairs at Princeton University, and a leading scholar on global warming, one of the top three ways to slow down global warming is to use energy-saving fluorescent light bulbs. He notes that if every American household replaced five light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs, it would save as much energy as if we took 8 million cars off the roads. 

According to the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), lighting accounts for about 39 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions from traditional electric generating plants. However, RMI estimated that CFL technology can cost-effectively save 50 to 90 percent of the power now consumed by lights in the United States. That would save $30 billion a year and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20 to 35 million tons per year.

“We upgraded each guestroom with four to six Fresh Bulbs™ in December,” says Mike Patel, owner of the 48-room Americas Best Value Inn in Middleton/Franklin, Ohio. “We had 75-watt incandescent bulbs before, so our guestroom lighting is significantly enhanced with these CFLs. 

“Just as important, we’re trimming our related lighting costs up to 70 percent,” Patel adds. “Anytime you can save money while improving the guest experience and be environmentally responsible, it’s a good thing.”
