Michael A. Rawson Joins The Sorrento Hotel, Seattle,
As its Managing Director
SEATTLE Oct. 23, 2006 Expanding upon an illustrious, 25-year career in the hotel industry, Michael A. Rawson has joined the Sorrento Hotel as its Managing Director and co-owner of a newly formed national hotel management company.

Rawson has served in executive capacities for some of the most notable hotel companies across the United States.  He recently served as Senior Vice President for André Balazs Properties, overseeing all eight hotels in four major cities including the Chateau Marmont (Hollywood), The Raleigh (Miami Beach), The Mercer (New York), as well as new development projects.  Prior to working with Balazs, Rawson was Chief Operating Officer for Chris Blackwells hotel enterprise, Island Outpost, which included management of the flagship property, The Tides (Miami Beach).  Rawsons career has included appointments in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., where he started with such respected hotels as The Ritz-Carlton, The Jefferson, The Watergate Hotel, The Morrison-Clark Inn and Georgetown Inn. He ascended to Vice President, Director of Operations of the Washington, DC-based Classic Collection of Fine Hotels & Restaurants.

Rawson assumed his current post in August, and is spearheading the repositioning of the historic Sorrento by establishing a strong foundation of business travelers and repeat guests. In his short time with the hotel, he has launched Café Palma, the Amalfi-inspired, seasonal outdoor dining area fronting the hotel. He is also in the process of refurbishing the hotels award-winning restaurant, the Hunt Club, to be completed next month in time for the holidays. The restaurant will have its own identity, separate from that of the hotel, and it will incorporate popularly priced menu items in a relaxed atmosphere to appeal to Seattle residents.

Concurrently, Rawson is establishing a new management company, Acumen Hotel Group with longtime owner of the Sorrento Hotel, Michael J. Malone.  The Sorrento Hotel is the first property in the new management groups forthcoming collection of independent, European style, luxury hotels.

As a graduate of the Cornell University, School of Hotel Administration, Rawson is credited with working alongside some of the best entrepreneurs in the hotel industry, such as André Balazs, Chris Blackwell, John B. Coleman, Edward Bennett Williams, and banker Richard Bernstein.  In addition to the knowledge gained from his mentors, Rawson took what he learned throughout his career and developed his own management style based upon concepts of empowering the staff through pride of ownership, hiring the most talented, passionate people in the marketplace, and maintaining the conceptual integrity and unique position of each property within its own locale.

Celebrating its centennial anniversary in two years, The Sorrento Hotel is Seattles oldest operating luxury hotel, located atop Seattles First Hill at 900 Madison Street, just four blocks from the city center. An atmosphere reminiscent of a fine estate, the Sorrento embodies a rich heritage of European hospitality and ambiance.
