The 2006 Gold Key Awards for Excellence in Hospitality
Design Presented to Eight Design Firms
- David Rockwell Named �Designer of the Year� -

NEW YORK, NY, November 13, 2006�The coveted Gold Key Awards for Excellence in Hospitality Design were presented to eight design firms on Monday, November 13, 2006, at New York City�s Mandarin Oriental Hotel, during the 91st annual International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show® (IH/M&RS). Selected from among 150 submissions, the grand prize winners were honored for the innovative design concepts and compelling themes that established their properties as international destinations. 

The 2006 IH/M&RS Gold Key grand prize winners are:

  • Best Hotel Design � Architrave, a division of Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts (Singapore) for Banyan Tree Ringha (Jian Tang, China)
  • Guest Room � Sol Meliá Hotels & Resorts and E. eG DiVeroli (Rome, Italy) for Senso Room, Hotel Meliá Roma Aurelia Antica (Rome, Italy)
  • Lobby/Reception Area � Rockwell Group (New York, NY) for Carlton Hotel (New York, NY)
  • Lounge/Bar � Zeff Design (New York, NY) for Social Hollywood (Los Angeles, CA)
  • Restaurants/Casual Dining � Steve Leung Designers, LTD and Alan Chan Design Company (Hong Kong, China) for MX (Hong Kong, China)
  • Restaurants/Fine Dining � Yabu Pushelberg (New York, NY) for FIN Restaurant, The Mirage (Las Vegas, NV)
  • Spa � Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group Spa Division & Remedios Siembieda (Long Beach, CA) for The Oriental Spa, The Landmark Mandarin Oriental (Hong Kong, China)
  • Suite � Architrave, a division of Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts (Singapore) for Banyan Tree Ringha (Jian Tang, China)
�The Gold Key Awards have become an important recognition with worldwide significance, as demonstrated by the 19 countries represented in this year�s competition,� said Christian Falkenberg, show manager. �We�re pleased to present the Awards in connection with the IH/M&RS, where hospitality design is recognized as a key sector of the industry.�

Highlighting the ceremony was the presentation of the �Designer of the Year� Award to David Rockwell, by Gold Key Awards sponsors HOTELS and Interior Design magazines. Rockwell was selected for this honor based on his dedication and significant contributions to the field of hospitality design. His work is seen in world class hotels such as the W New York, Art�otel in London and the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut, and at world-renown restaurants, bars and clubs, such as New York City�s Monkey Bar, Nobu, Sushi-Zen, Ruby Foo�s and Serafina.

In addition, NEWH, Inc., the Hospitality Industry Network presented the Icon of Industry Award to Maya Romanoff, artist, inventor and director of the Maya Romanoff Corporation, and leading creator of innovative wall covering and surfacing materials impacting the world of design. A $5,000 scholarship was presented in his name to Stacey Schield, a University of Cincinnati student currently working towards a career in the hospitality industry.

Judges for the 2006 Gold Key Awards were Carol Rusche Bentel, Bentel & Bentel; John Bricker, Gensler; Sam Kapadia, Doubletree Metropolitan Hotel; Tony May, Tony May Group, San Domenico New York; and Ellis O�Connor, Gramercy Park Hotel. Finalists were selected based on aesthetic appeal, practicality and functionality of design.

The International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show is sponsored by the American Hotel & Lodging Association; the Hotel Association of New York City, Inc.; the New York State Hospitality & Tourism Association, and is managed by George Little Management, LLC
